Gym membership
I'm going to sign up with Bally's tonight. I'm nervous, and excited. I have gained alot of weight and I've been dealing with depression (which doesn't help) and have been out of a job for 3-4 months now. I have decided (with my hubby's help) I'm going to go to the gym and swim 3 days a week and take some classes, walk/run on a treadmill. Hopefully I'll feel better and loose weight. Wish me luck!
Anyone else recently start going to a gym?
*UPDATE* 3/4/10
I joined the gym, doing lots of cardio and some weight training. I paid for a few sessions with a trainer to get me started and so far I'm lovin it. I am still getting into the routine and I have to push myself but I am so sick of the way I look and it's nobody's fault but my own. I've been trying to eat better like, when I get a sweet tooth, instead of grabbing ice cream or anything else I would normally do I have a bowl of cereal. It helps. I'm trying to drink more water. I am proud of myself. I do need to push myself a little more but that's normal, I think. lol I just wanted to share with you all. Hopefully I will start to see a difference in my clothes and costumes soon.Last edited by MahiraRaqs; 03-04-2010 at 10:00 PM.

Re: Gym membership
great! That's such a good thing to do! I work at a gym, so I can't exactly chime in too much on this thread, just wanted to say congrats :D
I've heard great things about Bally. They trained the Pussycat Dolls!! I'd join too if I could have a body like them ;)
Let us know what classes you take!

Re: Gym membership
That will help immensely. But be wary of doing too much at once - you might overdo, or become more depressed if you're not "doing as good as you wish". But don't let yourself find excuses, either.
When I don't feel like going, I promise myself that I'll only do one thing (treadmill, weeny weights, 20 min swim instead of 40, or 30 min instead of a long hard workout). Then I can drag myself, and sometimes I end up doing alot more than planned. Once or twice, I've only done maybe 20 min and then fled. But it doesn't matter - I went, I exercised, and that's infinitely better than not going.

Re: Gym membership
I belong to a YMCA. It's super cheap ($10.75/month), and it's all I can afford right now. It's very small, but I use the machines and sometimes take zumba and step aerobics. I was taking the yoga class, but the instructor is a real jerk, so I dropped it. I'm looking for another one, but I may try the pilates class which is in a different location.

Aweswome! I hope you do well with it!
I want to join a gym to, but I just can't afford it (and I'm afraid to drive).

Re: Gym membership
I'm starting next week! Hopefully I will get my membership tomorrow. Maybe even work out tomorrow! I feel like Jabba the Hut lately ("bring me Solo and the Wookie!").
I will keep you posted!

update
03-05-2010 04:14 PM #9Re: Gym membership
Just found this thread, Mahira. Great idea! And not just for weight loss but also for good mental health. I've been a member of a gym for 12 years and I usually go at least twice a week, then work out at home when I don't go to the gym to make at least working out four times a week. It helps with depression a whole lot. Most of my adult life I've exercised either through bike riding, running, dancing (mostly dancing) and even if I don't always lose weight I feel at least like I'm in some control of my body).
And feeling good about yourself physically and mentally is the most important. Makes you relate to others better too (although I've never seen you anything other than very nice to everybody around you).
I've always had to watch my weight but I got control of it once and for all which did help my self esteem. Being physically fit is not the total basis of my self esteem but just a part of it. But every bit does help. So keep it up for you and yourself.

Re: Gym membership
At my last place of employment I had automatic membership to the campus gym and loved going. Best way to work out the accumulated stress. Now I'm at a MUCH better job, but I really, REALLY miss going to the gym during my lunch hour! ..cr.:
There's a really nice gym across the street by my building, but it is WAY too expensive (I work out at home anyway). It taunts me when I'm on my noontime walks. ,m::

Re: Gym membership
I was a Golds Gym member for about 10 years before I started dancing and then switched to the Y because I could take some extra dance classes there. And I am still a Y member. I travel quite a bit from time to time and like the fact that I can find a Y almost anywhere. During the times when there are no group classes I use the aerobics studio as my own private dance rehearsal space--just me and my MP3 player!
Working out at the gym means no distractions, no laundry or dishes calling your name, no phones, no one needing your help. Its just you doing something for yourself.
I like to go mid-afternoon, taking a late lunch. There is a Y about 10 minutes from my office and on the days I go there for lunch I just plan to come in a little eary or stay a little late a work so that I can take an hour and a half for lunch and get in a good workout. Or I stop at the gym on the way home in the afternoon as a stress reliever and to put the cap on the workday.
Cross training is so hlepful for dancers. Take advantage of everything your gym has to offer!

Re: Gym membership
Recovering from hip replacement and unemployed since October (surgery in december) so I've been a couch potato for many months. Hubby and I just rejoined a local gym. It's a little disheartening-in my 30s I was a serious bodybuilder and now I was excited that I managed to stay on the treadmill for 1 mile-it took 32 minutes!
Jim is all encouragement, though.
He bought a pair of those Skecher shoes that are supposed to help shape you while you walk; they're supposed to be good for knee pain. Then he walked his 4 miles on treadmill. He sent me a text from work that night, "I think I sprained my a**!" He keeps my laughing.
