    Crohn's Disease

I'm just wondering if there are any dancers out there who have Crohn's disease? How do you manage your flare ups? Do you just...move on, dance like it doesn't hurt, and try to get by?

hey there...i have a very mild case of crohn's disease. it's pretty well controlled with my diet and medication. i used to get flare ups really badly before performances (i have a nervous stomach)...now i'm getting better with my nervousness.

when i did have flare ups before a show, it would just be bad right beforehand...but as soon as I started my set or stepped on stage, i forgot about it and danced like nothing was wrong.

i'm lucky that i don't have it bad, but there are times when i wish i could just get rid of it somehow. it can be hindering to an active lifestyle.

did you just get diagnosed with crohn's? how bad is it? i hope you can learn how to get your body under control (if not already under control). once you get to know the foods and other factors that cause flareups you can work on having it not effect your life as much. i'm aware that i have it, but it's not something that controls my life. i won't let it!

I've had Crohn's for awhile now..along with Endometriosis. The Crohns and the Endo seem to be at constant war with who gets to upset my stomach the most. Both cases are bad ones. I don't really suffer from nervous stomachs or anything. Diet wise, I know wheat products and junk food upset me more than eating healthy. I'm eating healthy right now. My diet is a weight loss program and it helps those with binge disorders like I have. I brought it to my GI doc and he gives it a thumbs up. The new diet helps with the constipation but doesn't help with the flare ups. I do have medication for it but it makes me sooooo stoned and pretty useless.

Last night I had a corn tortilla and I think that's what is killing me today. I've never been able to handle corn all that well.

I'm just so frustrated sometimes with feeling sick. Like right now..my energy is up there. I want to go out and do stuff, dance around, and go out and seize the world today. I wanted to go to Marshalls and find a new skirt. I'm working on a choreography for my next performance...and I wanna get up and dance so badly but the idea of getting up and actually using my pelvic muscles makes me want go back to bed.

Okay, lol, I'm done ranting now. My post sounds so woe-is-me. I just hate having to deal with this all the time and am wondering what other things people do to manage.

There is a certain coconut cookie that is supposed to help with something about Crohn's disease. I think it solves the diarrhea problem, or something like that. I will try to find it for you.

Edit: Here is one article about it.

Hey lady, I too am dancer with Crohn's. Runs in the family, lucky us. I am on meds and diet restrictions, and it works pretty well but I still have flares. I am an adventurous eater, and constantly running into new trigger foods.

I manage my flares with a liquid diet: Muscle Milk, protein shakes, vegetable juice (real, fresh juiced, no high fructose corn syrup), fruit juices (again, fresh). And LOTS of sleep. My immune system does best with 10 hours of sleep, less is no good for me.

I hear you, being sick and managing it sucks. It's frustrating and painful and exhausting. But, having a good support system, family, friends, and a therapist helps.

wow i'm sorry to hear that. that's a double whammy.
what medication are you taking that makes you feel stoned? i'm on asacol and it worked within a week for me. like i said, i'm one of the lucky few to have a mild case. they actually aren't positive that it's crohn's. they can't confirm it with tests, so they said it's "most likely" crohn's. i got diagnosed with it less than a year ago.

i know how it feels to feel sick/tired. i'm ALWAYS tired. all i want to do is sleep sometimes. i just started taking some vitamins (b complex) to see if that will help. my friends don't always understand when i tell them that i'm tired and can't go out that late (or not at all) etc. there are sooo many days where i don't feel like dancing or working out, but i try to force myself. it's annoying...

i hope the new diet helps you out. having a chronic condition definitely makes it ok to feel down sometimes. but please try not let it run your life. you will miss out on so much. it helps to have a support network. feel free to pm me if you'd like to talk more :)

Like I need another excuse to eat cookies. ..l;,

Seriously though. I'm going to try the liquid diet. Maybe I'm ingesting too many solid foods during flare ups. Today's menu is rice congee (basically homemade cream of rice) with banana. Time to get the blender out. I think I'll make me some Spinach/apple smoothies.

Have any of you tried Align? It's like 30 bucks a box so I've been apprehensive about it. I broke down and got it and have been taking it for a week now, but the box says that it takes awhile to "kick in".

Shaabichic, I take Bentyl. It's an antispasmatic. I take it along with Tylenol 3. I can't take steroids for the inflammation.. can't tolerate them. Bentyl works great if you want to feel high as a kite all the time.
