Carb Detoxing
Who has gone through this? How did you feel the first few days and how did you feel the next few? Since I started a couple of days ago, I have felt like I had a cold, runny nose and the like. Today has been the worst, super sinus pain/ migraine. I am trying to figure out if it is coincidental, part of the detox, or if I'm not eating enough. I am only cutting out obvious carbs like rice, I am not cutting out fruit and the like as I am both vegan and gluten free and I have to eat something! ..l;,
Gratitude for your sharing of your experiences!

Re: Carb Detoxing
It is part of detox and pretty normal. Did you stop cold turkey? It's best to gradually work up to avoiding starches [I'm assuming that's what you meant by "carbs," a misnomer perpetuated by poor marketing; complex carbohydrates are good] so that your detox symptoms are not so harsh.
Gradually meaning, 3 days before you withdraw from starches, stop eating processed foods, then remove meats/dairy, then starches, all the while supporting your system's detoxing efforts with dandelion root tinctures and herbal teas. Then you gradually reintroduce the foods you normally eat.
When I am detoxing, either through a deliberate cleanse or attending Vipassana, I'm generally lightheaded and feel headachey and slight body aches. I'm also especially cold/experience chills and unable to sleep.Last edited by Azhia; 02-26-2010 at 05:19 PM.

Re: Carb Detoxing
I *knew* you'd be the first to respond!
Yes, I meant starches, i.e. rice, potatoes. I became vegan/gf over a year ago, so meat and dairy are already out. I don't eat processed foods...hmmm...except tofu which would actually fall under that title, methinks.
Today I gave up a little- had tater tots with the migraine med, otherwise the med has me horribly nauseous. Soooo~ I'll be starting over again and will use your recommendations, Azhia. Thanks!

Re: Carb Detoxing
I still have to try the vegan pho recipe you gave me!
There is a really wonderful book that discusses the best way (in my opinion) to undergo a cleanse that does not involve starvation...
"If the Buddha Came to Dinner" by Halé Sofia Schatz. My recommendations are based off of her book and she's included a ton of amazing recipes (Buddhism certainly not a pre-requisite
).
Yes, tofu would be included in the group of proteins that you eventually stop eating during a cleanse. By all means, you must take your meds!

Re: Carb Detoxing
I may not be using the correct terminology. I didn't eat carbs/starches for a few days bc I had been eating too many of them. So I quit, cold tofurkey. I felt 'off' for a few days but Friday began the toughest period for me (incredibly severe sinus headache/pain) that has lasted through this morning.
It occurred to me this morning that it may not have had much to do with lack of carbs - for Lent, I gave up eating out: food, coffee, beverages...anything that doesn't come from my kitchen, I'm not eating. Last year for Lent I gave up gluten products and became vegan and I felt similarly then, which leads me to my epiphany this morning: my body is de-sludging! I think I have a couple more days of general unwellness and then I will be on the upswing.
I'm still buying Buddha though! I looked for it at Border's to no avail so will be purchasing on Amazong. Also being added to my library is The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics. I have it on loan from the library but I believe I would like to own it.
