FCBD floor work and lower back issues?

I've been working on the FCBD floorwork DVD.

I had a discectomy in October. I feel so much better since surgery. I feel stronger, but I'm always a little scared . . . I think I originally herniated that disk by pushing the back bendy stuff too much . . .

So . . . when I do the "floor work sit up", I have a very large arch in my lower back. It feels very tight and . . . unprotected when I am in that position . . .

Common sense makes me think that I could possible compress / herniate other discs while in that position . . . it just feels uncomfortable . . .

Is this something that is normal and I just need to quit worrying? Am I doing the move improperly? Is it something I will have to keep working at till I get it?

Just wondering if I should continue with this . . . . I NEVER want to go through the whole back injury thing again . . . but I also think, "if they can do it, why can't I?"

    Advice?????? Please. . . .

Hi Zepora! I'm not an expert. I don't do back bendy stuff! I am concerned though...... I would definitely check with your doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry!

It may be more useful to ask about this very specific issue on the FCBD tribe on tribe.net, because the FCBD gals actively participate there.

Who knows, sometimes Carolena pops in herself - and I am fairly certain that she will be able to answer this better than anybody else, given that she knows a good bit about anatomy and doing things in a safe way.

Try shooting a PM or email to Flissy / Omchantress. She's using the video and as a yoga instructor with anatomy experience might be able to help you out.

Hey there! Sorry I didn't see this sooner.

My first thought without seeing exactly what you're doing is that maybe your quads are on the tight side. When I am all the way to the floor, my tailbone is super-tucked, lessening (but not flattening) the curve in the low back. If your quads or inner thighs are tight, you might not be able to get that super-tuck action. I recommend working on the yoga version of this (Virasana & Supta Virasana) because it's generally safer for your knees than the wider stance shown in the video.

Personally, I'm not a fan of that floorwork sit-up exercise. I am much more comfortable working on my own or with a partner to do the full layback by working my way further down and up slowly. A partner would be able to see what's going on with your back and would also be able to support you on your way back up if you get stuck or if your back is feeling compromised.

I hope that helps! Definitely be careful with yourself!
