SPD in pregnancy, how does it affect dance?

So, I'm 20 weeks pregnant and very happily dancing up to now.

I've started to get symptoms of SPD though, and I am a bit concerned as to how dancing might impact upon it.

On the one hand I really don't want to do lasting damage to my pelvis, but on the other, I don't want to stop doing something I love which is keeping me fit during my pregnancy. I am also aware that the physio exercises for SPD seem to work a lot of BD muscles, and if these muscles are holding my pelvis together, I don't want to stop using them and let them waste, as that could make the whole thing worse.

I'm not getting much pain at all when I dance (less than walking oddly, I wonder if this is because I am actively holding my pelvis in position). It hurts a lot to roll over in bed, get out of bed, sit on a hard surface etc, squats with feet apart hurt a little, with feet together don't hurt at all.

My teacher hasn't had a lot of pregnant students, so any more advice would be great.

Obviously I will be talking to my midwife about this, but as the midwife is not a dancer, I am not sure what specific advice she will be able to give (and from speaking to other mums to be in the area, it will probably be to stop dancing and take to my bed! They really don't seem to like you to be too active!)

Re: SPD in pregnancy, how does it affect dance?

Oh honey. I'm so sorry. I had terrible SPD starting at about week 22 with my daughter, and I ended up nearly crippled for the rest of my pregnancy.

If dancing is helping you, KEEP DOING IT. (That's my non-medical opinion, of course!) You might also want to see a really good physical therapist, because mine taught my husband how to do some massages that reduced the pain quite a bit. He ended up giving me a massage almost every single night -- one of the few side benefits of SPD. :D

Good luck. I feel for you.

Yeah dont think I can help but I had it in my third pregnancy and it hurt like hell. I could barely walk let alone dance. It goes once you give birth but every now and then if I use force with my leg the wrong way I feel something and its been nearly 14 mths.

good luck, hope you can keep up the dancing!!
