Thread: pain on ovulation

Anyone else out there get wicked pain around ovulation time? I've had it since my kids were born, about ten years. Though it only lasts a few hours, it is the most wicked pain, even my butthole aches, and I have to just lay still and focus on breathing. It seems to switch sides most months. Does anything prevent this?

This is a dumb question, but have you seen a specialist? Someone I know has dysmenorrhea but not 100% sure if it is related to what you have.

Yes, I do. They feel like B.A. cramps and then I usually don't cramp too bad when I actually have my period. But I do not have children. I only take pamprin or ibuprofen for them.

I did, once upon a time...I had several ovarian cysts that caused a lot of pain during ovulation. Your ob/gyn can see if these are the cause with a simple and painless vaginal ultrasound.

These cysts were benign, they just finally grew so large and became so painful that they had to be removed. I've been pain-free ever since!

So-called "functional" poly-ovarian cysts can cause pain during ovulation, though I'm not sure it's what you describe. I get mid-cycle cramps and sharp "shooting pains" on one side frequently during ovulation, supposedly caused by the egg sac not opening up to release the egg (thus it swells and enlarges and causes discomfort).

This condition is benign and the cysts usually dissolve within a few months, but you should of course check with a health care provider to see if this is what's going on with you. There are other less benign things that can cause pain during ovulation.

i had a cyst that popped and stuck to my abdominal wall. then scar tissue formed and it stayed there ever since, so sometimes i get pulling and sharp pain from that, but it never radiated to the back.
check with a dr, like Nasila said, there could be less benign things causing it.

I've had it since I was young. It doesn't mean skip the check with your GYN, but this might help you...

Mittelschmerz! Awesome. I can't believe there's even a word for it. It's not so alien after all. I have checked with my gp who said it was probably just cysts and not to worry. One of the drawbacks of our free canadian healthcare is that it seems sometimes you have to really push to see a specialist when something is subtle, or transient. I'll mention it next time I go to the Dr. and get it double checked. Hopefully I never get it when I have to dance - "sorry, can't dance now, my ovary is in a pinch!" Thanks ladies.

Yep... I asked my Dr about it and he told me it was Mittleschmerz

Ended up with Endometrious cancer stage 4 at 49 years old...had bad bad cramps

I get mittelschmerz, though mine isn't severe, just annoying.

And I only ever get it on the right side...I dunno if the left ovary is non-functional or just well-behaved! :)

Yep that is the term. I suffered from mittelschmertz at various times. In my teens I had an episode so severe that I actually had a seizure during it. Thank goodness that was the only time that happened! I did end up having a hysterectomy in my early forties due to PCOS and endometriosis so that ended the mittelschmertz.

I think this just happened to me (literally like an hour ago). I've actually had it happen many times in my life, but not at regular intervals. My doctor's have never seemed concerned or mentioned that it might be a problem. I didn't know that it could be a cyst. Although I do suspect that I have PCOS.

Mine is more common on my right side too!
