Thread: Figs!

hello! want to share with everyone this beauty secret!

i've been buying dried figs for my mum where ever i fly to because my mum suffers from constipation and h....roid (the thing in the poo-hole) and figs are supposed to be good for these things. a while ago my mum said that her friends told her her skin looked nicer. my mum doesn't use any skincare products and that year she stopped playing tennis so she thought the dark spots on her face disappeared after she stayed away from the sun. until one day she read on newspaper that figs help clean many of our organs and when organs are clean and healthy, our skin also become clean and healthy!

i didn't think much at the time, but a few minutes ago my mum told me that my aunt (mum's sister) 's skin has become really nice! my aunt has same poo problem and also eats figs regularly. she said her skin especially her hands were always very dry and now they are not dry!

so now i must start eating figs also, especially because i'm the one who buy them and carry them home!

if you want to start eating figs too, my mum and my aunt eat about 3 per day x

They taste good too!

also great for those of us with anemia... high in (digestible) iron!

I'm so impressionable - I just bought a box of these in the hopes that they would improve my skin. ..g.: They're tasty!

i love figs! Wlamart sells them by the box for like a buck lol!

Depending on where you live, you can grow a fig tree in your yard. They need full sun. I have a monster that I planted when we moved into our house 20 years ago. It is an off shoot of an off shoot brought to the US by my great grandparents from Italy in 1850s. I love this tree. You have never tasted figs until you eat them fresh off a tree... Harvest time is Aug - Sept.

My daughter just made baked figs with goat cheese stuffing. Absolutely delicious!!! Cut off the top and scrape some of the inside out with a spoon and fill with soft goat cheese sprinkle balsamic vinegar on top and drizzle with olive oil...Yum

which just goes to show that a squeaky clean poo hole is a squeaky clean complexion. Alchemy!

so, so jealous- sadly, Alaska is not the place to do this ,f::
I've been trying to convince hubby that we need an indoor arboretum, my dwarf hibiscus is doing quite well- but no one will ship lemon trees to Alaska for us to try, even in summer. Now I will be hunting down fig tree suppliers, likely with the same result. So very, very sad. Poor lonely hibiscus.

I have an arboretum - and they leak warm air... I can imagine in Alaska this would be a REAL drain on your heating bill. I have 2 hibiscus trees - both rescues - maybe another one for you to keep the lonely critter company?

But in Alaska isn't it DARK all winter long? How does it grow? How do you stay sane with no sunlight?

Do you think it would work in the Midwest (Chicago 'burbs)?? Really want one now!!!

O...M...Gooooodnessss! This sounds divine!!!!!!!!!

Betcha u could do a dessert variation: Substituting the goat cheese with Greek vanilla yogurt or ricotta cheese, and the balsm.vinegar/olive oil with Honey! :)

I live in the Washington DC area, but the tree was originally acclimatized in NYC/New Jersey (think Sopranos...). Yet I think Chicago winters may get too cold. There could varieties that withstand the cold. You would have to ask your garden store.

I love figs!!! Would love to grow a fig tree, but conditions are a bit harsh here on the beach...can grow catcus and yucca like nobody's business. Actually have huge healthy spider lilies, but they grow under the deck in the shade. Wonder if there's room for a fig tree....would be worth a try, for sure. Anyone know of a good website/company to order from?

Thanks for the link, already went and checked it out. Interesting, most all the different fig species will apparently tolerate the coast. I'm on an island though, so the the salinity can be a problem. Although I had cherry tomatoes this year that never needed any salt added, they all were naturally sea-salted!

LUCKY!!! I adore cherry & grape tomatoes!!! :)

It was pretty neat (BIG smile), especially since it was my first time to grow them out here. Yum!

Wow, thanks for this thread. I am definitely trying this and all of the above ideas as well.

What about dried figs? They do have a lot of fiber, don't they? Do they have the same health effect?

my mum and aunt eat drid figs. it's insanely expensive to get fresh ones, so yes, dried figs work!

well- winter started a couple weeks ago as far as snow, but we gradually loose sun & then gradually get it back (at least here in the interior- it's not like Bethel where the sun sets for 4 months...)

& I use a happy-light for vitamin D & sanity- my house plants like the happy-light too. Tanning booths may be a dangerous luxury in some places- here it can actually be medically prescribed to combat SAD.

I only have a hibiscus because a former roommate was a biology major & brought one home from the experimental greenhouse- you have to be sneaky because no one will ship the darn things up. If anyone wants to mail me a sapling next spring, I would greatly appreciate it! We've thought of ordering a tree & having it sent to my inlaws to mail up or bring on the plane or something.

Anywho- breakfast tomorrow:1/4 cup dried figs, 1/4 cup coconut flakes, 1/2 cup millet, 1 cup water, 1tsp vanilla in the small crock pot overnight- I love warm, no work breakfasts on a cold winter morn!
