Thread: Alopecia areata(losing patches of hair)

My mother suffered terribly with alopecia nervosa, that manifested itself in losing patches of hair. It was much worse when she had a highly stressful life (when her relationship with my father was making her very unhappy). When the source of the stress went away, her hair did regrow eventually, but never as thickly as it used to. That could have been just her age, I know that my hair is much thinner now than when I was younger. But I do appreciate that this is not necessarily the same condition as alopecia areata.

I´ve had it before in a stressful situation(grew up with my grandmother,she got liver cancer when I was 19)It came back this spring when I moved from my ex and his daughter;miss her so much after living with her for more than 9 years.:(
My doctor suggested cortisone injections in the scalp,but reading your reply I decide not to.
Better to focus on having peaceful living conditions I guess...

Mine started falling out when I switched birth control pills a few months ago. I stopped that garbage.

i lost my eyelashes once..i divorced him.

I had a similar experience as Darbla.

A while back I got the depo provera shot and I gained 30 pounds and my hair started falling out on the sides.

My girlfriend got the same shot and she started loosing hair in patches. Her hair loss was quarter sized and completely smooth bald circles around the upper part of the back of her head. Mine was more like thinning hair loss.

The one thing she and I had in common with the hair loss was the injection and the time frame of the spike of the hormones that was added to our systems.

My hair seems to have recovered, but I don't know if my girlfriend's ever came back. I haven't seen her in years.

I'm going through a very stressful situation at this moment and I've been losing lots of hair. I've had several depression issues in my life.
Yesterday when I looked at the mirror I could see some loss on scalp. I got very nervous with that and I didn't sleep well tonight...
I've been doing a treatment with "Viviscal" for about one year (because I was already suffering from hair loss), but I see no difference so far. I will stop it pretty soon...

hi there. my brother has had this since he was 9 or 10 years old. it was hard watching him grow up with this problem. kids are very cruel and he had a hard time in school because of it. he is completely bald and has no eyelashes/eyebrows or anything. it's not as bad now since he's an adult, but i feel for anyone who has it...especially females. :(

I had it after I had my son. All the visible fall out occurred right in the front and center. ..cr.:
My doctor told me my levels of Creatine were low. I had to eat a bunch of red meat, tuna, salmon and cranberries (also told me to eat organ meat but thats were I drawl the line!) until I gain ten lbs as a side effect. I guess it worked b/c my hair stopped falling out and grew back in accordance with my regular hair growth and loss cycle.

I have a friend who suffers alopecia and she say's it's stress related but when she was pregnant and lactating her hair grew back beautifully until she stopped breastfeeding her bub.
Sounds to me like it could also be a hormonal thing too.

I will tell you all the crazy things I'm doing to get mine back, but I don't know if this would work for everyone:

(1) Apply miconazole nitrate to your scalp, as often as you can. Register at and search for it on http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/...isplay.php?f=9 and you will see why I called it crazy.

(2) Start ingesting diatomaceous earth. It is full of silica for hair growth. Research it also at above link.

(3) Back on Yasmin birth control pills, because Yasmin is high in estrogen which has hair retention qualities. The high androgens in the Seasonique garbage I was on was causing the baldness like men go through.

(4) And I just ordered Mega-Tek:

(5) Forgot to mention essential oils. Found the recipe while searching for hair growth stuff awhile back, and I mix it up myself. I smells fabulous and I massage it into my scalp.
Grape Seed oil - 4 Teaspoons
Jajoba oil - 1 Teaspoon
Rosemary oil - 3 Drops
Lavender oil - 3 Drops
Cedarwood Atlas oil - 2 Drops
Thyme oil - 2 drops

So sorry to hear,yes kids can behave so cruel to the "different"looking
I´m lucky going through this as an adult,and after working many years in the beauty industry I have some clever tricks to mask it-somehow I´m reluctant to the costisone treatment.Thank you for sharing this<3

A-Ha!Yes sometimes he was a "thorn in my side"...I really believe the hairloss comes from missing the lovely girl that was like a daughter for me so many years.
