OMG, what just happened to my calf mucles?

About 20 minutes ago I took a step, heard and felt a pop in the calf muscles in my right leg (yes, muscles, we have two in there) and now it feels like the biggest, baddest charlie horse in my life is going on in there.

Bit of history: for the last week or so I've been gimping along because that same calf has been sore for no reason I can determine.

It's ice, compression, and rest for muscle injuries, right?

Oh dear, nasty! A friend of mine did that in class last year, we actually heard the 'pop' she went off to the hospital to have it checked out, yes they used ice etc and physio a bit later, she is OK now. Can't remember how long she was out of class, but it was a few weeks.Hope it heals soon, you poor thing.

It sucks. I've NEVER had this happen before! I'm sitting on the floor, leg out in front of me, propped up on a bag of frozen corn. Sooooo sexy.....

If this keeps up I'll have to work on a costume to keep my mind busy.

is there swelling? heat radiating from it? is it getting worse? get to the doctor, you need to figure out what type of injury that it might be.

Isn't leg pain and swelling a possible symptom of a blood clot? Which could "migrate" and cause big problems in the heart or lungs.

Please get this checked out, Doozer. Better to be on the safe side.

Re: OMG, what just happened to my calf mucles?

No swelling or heat, just an extremely sore spot where the bottom of the calf muscle attaches to the Achilles tendon, now that it (and I) have calmed down. Still no fun, just staying off of it and if it still feels strange tomorrow I'm going in!

It is much better this morning! Woot!

As a gymnast, power lifter, volleyball player, cheerleader, dancer, etc., etc. I've had some doozies. This just felt very strange compared to the usual pulls and small tears.

Note to self and EVERYONE else...don't try to dance without warming up! Big lesson!

My friend had something similar happen, heard a pop too - she tore a tendon and was out of commission for several months. Just saying, be very careful until its' quite healed.

Yes, I don't get why people dance without warming up, sometimes I have quite the issue with particular students who actually seem to have an attitude about it, like "I don't have to warm up!" I have to keep after them to do the warmups... and I'm thinking, Well, we'll see who was right sooner or later, yes? lol

Re: OMG, what just happened to my calf mucles?

This happened to me about 3 or 4 years ago. I was on crutches for a couple of weeks. It was the interior calf muscle. It exploded on stage during a dress rehearsal (I had been warmed up but I was doing high impact) and I hit the floor and could not walk. I went to the hospital and they did xrays looking for clots. I was ok but the pain was incredible. It healed eventually but I have to stretch that calf all the time. It was like an explosion went off in my calf.

I had something like that happen a few years ago--turned out I had partially torn my plantaris tendon. It took months of physical therapy to heal, so I'll join the others in saying get to a doctor ASAP!

Now, if I don't warm up and stretch my calves before dancing, I'm just asking for trouble.

    hi,,,
First of all I have to tell you that there is not plenty of research underway on this.A very few people.Treatment then progressed to strengthening exercises for the antagonists and later the agonists, and quadriceps exercises. This treatment protocol was considered effective as evidenced by a recurrence of the condition in only 0.7% of the patients.

So far it's not been painful, just incredibly sore and tight. When I overdo it ice/rest/ibuprofen for a day or two followed by deep massage and heat seem to be helping. The trick is to keep from reinjuring it which is literally a trick because it's the unexpected things that do the damage.

It'll be alright...just as I've seen from your posts it'll heal in time. Thank goodness it wasn't a crutch worthy injury!

Sounds like a classic tear of the gastrocnemius/soleus.

A severe tear is worth getting checked out by a doctor. Hope you feel better soon.

"Pop" is never a good sound. Get thee to an orthopod, stat. (N0 cheating by dancing until You are cleared). If it is a partial tear you may need to prevent it from becoming a full-blown rupture that could require surgery and months of therapy & activity restriction. Sorry you are benched.

For the record: warm up before, stretch afterwards.

    Hope you are better soon.

Re: OMG, what just happened to my calf mucles?

It's taken a full month and it's nearly back to normal...didn't go to the doc b/c/ the deductible is astronomical, and I mean ASTRONOMICAL.

Being careful and doing good self care has paid off but I don't suggest that anyone else not get it looked at if it happens to you.

When you injure something you really have no idea how much you use it until you can't.

Thank you for the concern, ladies....from what I've read it sounds like it was a tear (have had them before, different places).

Glad you are feeling better. And sorry about the crappy health insurance that requires such a large deductible.

Hey Doozer - just FYI i don't know if you are on any antibiotics routinely, but some have been known to cause spontaneous rupture of the Achilles (bad news). If you are on one, I'd ask your doctor about it. Also, this may be in your routine already, but Epsom salt baths or foot soaks are a great way to get spastic muscles to relax, especially upon recovering from an injury. Generally 2 cups Epsom salt per bath, or 1 cup per foot bath.
