- About Me:
- For the past four years I've studied Middle Eastern music and dance and am stunned by how much is still out there. Ya know: the whole more-you-learn-the more-you-realize-how much-you- don't- know- phenomenon...
I am content to be a professional student of this dance and about the only aspirations I have to perform are at our local haflas and festivals with my classmates. It's a blast.
I must credit this site with teaching me so many things. I mean, where else is there a one stop shop to learn the difference between Cabaret and Modern while also getting the latest techniques for false eyelash application?
- My Favorite Dancers:
- Samia Gamal, Suhair Zaki, Ranya Renee, Aziza (so playful!) my teacher, Aleili, and Seattle's own Manon. Anyone that dances with awesome technique and complete abandon and joy.
- My Favorite Costumes:
- Don't own any to speak of really. I just bought a new flying skirt thought that is my new favorite thing. I am drawn to gypsy/romani style costumes and prefer the mirrored and metal bras and belts with belly drapes.
I do love classic Egyptian style old school costumes with the full chiffon skirts and beaded bedlahs. I don't own one though.
- My Dance/Music Style:
I guess I would say Classic Egyptian/Cabaret. I was trained in ballet so there's a lot of sweeping and swirly moves in my dance. Right now I am working on hands. Graceful hands and arms.
Musically I've always loved the drum solo. Technique-wise I'm far from being able to dance to a whole solo yet. (improv is not my strong suit) but I hope to learn.
Not a fan of modern Egyptian club type music or fusiion. I prefer again, old school pieces and instruments. Love chiftitelli pieces. Trying to learn Baladi also.
- My Favorite Music:
- Secular? haha. Love the Doors, Neil Young, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Yes, Led Zeppelin, (can't beat Jimmy Page), Ramones, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elmore James, Louis Jordan, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Nelson,
my MP3 player is 16 gigs and it's FULL. Does that answer the question? Too many to list
- My Inspirations:
- My Grandmother,
my dance teacher,
a couple of women in my belly dance community-one of which is 81!
- Anything Else . . .:
