About Me

Born and bred an American girl, raised on a mountainside and on bluegrass music, Shems' story is your classic love story. Girls sees belly dance across a crowded field, girl falls in love with belly dance, girl trains obsessively for years to become good. Girl dances everyday and loves it.

Currently Shems teaches weekly classes in Baltimore, MD and performs and teaches workshops wherever called upon. Shems directs a wonderful performing troupe: the Barakaat Middle Eastern Dance Company.

For dance, I love many classic Arabic pieces by Abdel Halim Hafiz, Um Koulthum, Mohammed Abdel Wahab, Baligh Hamdi, Fairouz, Rahbani Bros, Sabah, Warda and so on. Especially fully orchestrated, modern recordings beautifully arranged for dance.

Also, I have great admiration for many Turkish music artists.
