Re: Contracts becoming complicated at the last minute.
hey, now- we have at least 3 major airlines in Alaska, plus the internationals... largest airport in the nation if you count seaplanes, after all...
but on your issue- yeah, at this point it's probably a little late, but definitely put a clause in there in the future! We signed our last contract with an instructor right after the local volcano blew, so that's what inspired us to put in a flight problem/cancellation clause- basically, if travel is impossible, we are still responsible for workshop payment, but the isntructor is willing to work with us on rescheduling if we can work out acceptable dates. We put ALL dates in the contract (per instructor request) from the time they leave to the time they land home. & now we put in where we are flying them from too- last year the guest instructor moved to another territory after we bought the plane tickets, so we were obliged to spend an additional $800 to fly her back to where she originally said she was flying from. I know not much of this applies directly to your situation- maybe you could put a clause in the contract about travel delays? or perhaps the airline can offer an alternative? When on a tight schedule, I have occasionally been offered bus/cab transport (once I was rerouted via a dehaviland biplane... complimentary ear plugs)

Are you even bound by the contract if they've changed the flight times/dates? I wouldn't have thought so -- it's a pretty significant change if you and others all have to rearrange your schedules, make other plans, hire babysitters, petsitters, whatever and possibly losing money instead of making money.

Actually, I was thinking that you could just tell them that the terms (ie. dates, etc) are so different from when you set up the agreement with them that you aren't going to be available. Just walk away.
