Thread: What to wear underneath

Help! I just bought a lovely dress that has armpit to ankle sheer black net panels along the sides. The panels are not wide enough to be overly revealing or dangerous but you can obviously see anything that would be underneath them.

I tried it on wearing a nude SugarPetals (leotard type) but serging at the leg shows. Same with black SugarPetals. I need something to smooth out the lumps and bumps so just wearing a thong with clear straps isn't gonna work.

Any suggestions? Danskin footless bodysuit? Spanx? What do the rest of you wear under these?

Souzan, a lot of dancers in this area wear Spanx or flesh-colored boy shorts under costumes like this. They're not totally invisible, but sometimes that's a good thing -- the audience can concentrate on your dancing rather than speculating about your underwear (or lack thereof).

footless capri length tights, flesh coloured. get them a size too big, put hooks on the waistband and hook them into the bra like a belly cover.

I have some flesh-colored boyshorts that are seamless. I got them at Filene's. I'd much rather wear those than a clear-sided thong (even if I could find one, which I can't).

gosh, I was wondering the same thing about a couple of cossies I just got in Egypt. what are spanx?

Thanks for all the suggestions, girls. I am thinking about the footless tights or body suit or the Spanx that go up under the bust. Especially since the Spanx have some sucker-in power to them!! Because of the sheer black mesh areas, the bra is hard Egyptian cups but no chest band. The cups fit well and are supportive, but I think I am going to add the chest band. I showed the dress to a costume designer friend and she suggested that since the chest band would be visible through the mesh that I make it part of the design. So I'll probably put some light embellishment on the mesh where the bra would show and maybe also at the hip area. Or I might glam up the body sit or boyshorts where they area visible through the mesh panels.

Absolutely love the dress! Very sexy for an old broad like me!

sorry to hijack your thread Souzan, but I've been wondering the same thing! I'm in love with a Madame Alba beledi dress. It's all black mesh with sequins and I have no idea what to wear underneath. The black shorts under mesh look just isn't for me, cos I find that I'm looking at these big ugly ol shorts and not at the dress, (or the dancer!) but I don't want people thinking I'm naked, so...

Any suggestions guys? I really really want to buy this dress..!

Not sure if you will have room or if it's dressy enough, but I like the pretty leggings from american apparel. They are pretty thin. Basic black. They also have silver & gold lame. Methinks the silver lame could be great.

Target has a less expensive version of Spanx called Assets that I love and are lasting.

maybe -
conservative look = black unitard
will make the sequins and beads stand out

sexy look = nude/flesh colored unitard or body suit. [available from ballet wear companies]
