5 PIECE AUTHENTIC HANDMADE BELLY DANCE DANCING COSTUME - (eBay item 330062737163 end time Dec-08-07 12:47:06 PST)
I posted this on a "what were they thinking of " thread on Orientaldancer and the more I look at this item, the more my jaw drops and my eyes roll. The bra and belt is covered in glitter dot, some one has bastardized hip scarves, I cannot make out the skirts and the price 350$...and worse still the price paid originally from "Jodette"600$..
I think I have heard a few of you go on about ...er I mean mention her in passing....
What also worries me is that 2 dancers are after the costume..what!!!!!,r:;![]()

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
I think later on I may possibly be sending her a private message to point her in the direction of websites like Bellydance with K and Dahlal so she doesn't get ripped off in the future!! Geez!!!

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
Also, there's a badly disguised advertisement in the description...
And who ever thought it would help to make the text BIG?
It's OK for a beginners costume and would probably look nice on a student group. But the price is out of question.

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
Hm, it must not be fun to be in the seller's shoes: She purchased the costume for $600, performed once (making a little bit of money) - and now she's stuck with it. Even though her price seems too high, one can't blame her for trying to recoup some of her expenses.

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
I am just amazed that ANYBODY would think that this is worth 600 $.
I mean, it screams "I can do that myself!" all over!
And how can you advertise a person who ripped you off so badly...

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
Some people don't know the difference. They just see the words, "belly dance costume", and they go for it.

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
OMG - to think that she could have had a Bella for about the same price.
That is criminal.
Meissoun's right - How could she advertise someone who ripped her off like that??

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
I'm so SICK of the word "authentic" being used in stuff like this. Explain to me how this is authentic! Glitter dot is "authentic?" Cheap tin coins are "authentic?" How in the WORLD would a beginner know what is "authentic" and what isn't? The word just gets abused so much, and I guess it irritates me because it totally skews and muddles the history of costuming.
*Yes, of COURSE there were Swarovski crystals on the first belly dancers' costumes. Of course sequins were a very important part of middle eastern history. Wars were started over the trading of spices, chiffon and lycra."

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
Wow. I mean, "wow"!!!!! This is just awful and yes it's scary that two dancers are after it. It's so awful, I am having a VERY tough time imagining that a beginner dancer would pay, or even be able to pay $600 for any costume, let alone this one. Doesn't seem credible to me, any dancer could is internet literate enough to list on e-Bay would be able to find better costuming than this. Then again, it would not be the first time a newbie dancer got a new costume because boyfriend or parents didn't know any better and is now sincerely regretting it and wanting to dump it. And she only wore it once, well, (snort) of course because it is awful!!!!

I don't mean to slander anyone here, but I've heard a lot about Jodette, I wonder if it is *Jodette* herself selling it......hmmm

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
It doesn't look like two people are bidding on it, but two offers have been placed on it via ebay's "Best Offer" feature. Looking at the history, someone put in a best offer twice (back in April) and it was refused by the seller both times.
But I just checked the listing again, and someone else put in an offer today, so hey, someone probably read this post and decided they'd like a shot at owning this costume. (Hopefully their best offer is much less than the asking price!)

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
this doesn't sound like someone who realizes it's **** and is hoping to recoup some of her loss. if the seller really paid Jodette $600 for this, she does not realize she's been had. if she had figured out that she'd been ripped off, why would she mention Jodette in such an admiring way? wouldn't you be pissed as ****, at yourself for being a sucker and at the person who took advantage of your ignorance. if this person had figured out Jodette ripped her off (assuming that's true) she'd know referring to Jodette as its source would not enhance it. whoever is calling this "authentic" still follows the Jodette line.

Poor sad glitter dot fabric. I won't sew that stuff anymore. I can't imagine paying that much for that set...

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
Hi there!
I'm sorry, but I, as a costumer/alterationer, can say that this costume is a large triangle egyptian hipscarf that they cut in 2 to cover a bra & "belt". You can see from the belt that the fabric does not cover it all the way on the left side & bottom. The fabric has the dots already on them (King of Nile sometimes has a few of this style). I would not price it for $600 for that quality.
I have done it before for certain beginner dancers who can only afford a hipscarf & extra fabric ($75-80 tops), but they would pay me more to make to costume for them. I feel really bad for her to actually buy it for $600 & now is charging what $350 for it.... NO WaY!!!
Oh! btw. Turquoise international is having a sale, designated back costumes (Ahmed & Versace of Egypt) are 40 percent off!

I paid $350 for a horrible 1st costume...I think it's a right of passage.

Re: I just had to ask you all as well
i went to jodettes.com to see what other "professional, authentic costumes" she is selling to innocent beginners and there are no costumes listed.
but i did learn that she is still the only authentic teacher in the usa, she was the first teacher in the history of the usa, and that she introduced both beladi and candelabra to the usa. which is most interesting because a few weeks ago, someone else told me they introduced shamadan to the usa. hmmmmm :)Last edited by sabrinabellydancer; 12-11-2007 at 04:51 AM. If glitterdot is authentic, then so is every piece of crappy fabric at JoAnn's.
