Sweaty Face? Try Milk of Magnesia...

I love makeup "secrets." It's my profession so I obsess and seek out whatever can do the job.

I won't take credit for this one 'coz it's Billy B's technique but if you are a particularly sweaty dancer whose makeup tends to run down more annoyingly than a loose skirt, apply Milk of Magnesia as a makeup primer.

I applied this to dancers' faces at a recent Philly Fringe Festival dance theater performance. Billy B uses this on Beyonce for her concerts.

Doesn't have to be flavored, but apply it quickly and with a sponge or else it will dry white and crusty. It provides a really matte finish. Try it for a photo shoot, if you get sweaty under the lights.

    That is all... .p::

    Mwuhahaa...
I really love BareEscentuals. I use it as my everyday, as well as performance, foundation. It breathes, you can customize colours (I tend to be darker in summer so I add more #2 with the #1.5), and 2nd most importantly, when you remove it, you can see it on the thing with which you used to remove (cotton ball, face towel, etc.). That to me means that it did not seep into my skin and enter my circulation, it came off when I asked it to.j
#1 important to me is that it does not contain preservatives, and mica does not harbour bacteria. 60% of what you put on your skin (whatEVER it is) is absorbed by it and enters your circulation (petroleum, tar, mineral oil, methyl- and propyl-parabens, etc. ICKY).
I believe it is also a finely milled mineral foundation. Other cheap imitations either contain talc (a big BOO to talc b/c it gets trapped in the pores and causes them to ENLARGE, who wants enlarged pores) and they are not as finely milled, making it an inferior product b/c it is not blendable.
Drawback to any mineral-based foundation is its ability to creep and settle into fine lines. ERGO, moisturize nicely before.
I always use a silicone-based primer (my favorite and highly recommended is the Velvet Skin Coat made by DHC) and in the wintertime, Aveda's Hydrating Mask (it is clear gel) for added moisture just before applying Bare Minerals. The fine layer it creates does not allow the minerals to seep into my (numerous) lines and also further prevents it from seeping into my skin.
I also use Bare Escentuals foundation on brides. It tends not to be too reflective for bridal photography and has real lasting power, especially when applied with the kabuki brush.
Eye shadows by Bare Escentuals...in the containers the colors are fabulous and amazing! I actually use a lot of their shadows for everyday use but I find that I need to really prime my eyelids b/c they are not as intensely pigmented as, say, a true pigment, like those made by Makeup Forever (dooooon't get me started on Makeup Forever b/c I love that line and can talk about it ad nauseum. what, too late?) So for everyday they're good, but you'd have to lay it on quite a bit thicker for performance. The mineral eyeliner they make is superb.
Are you sure you wanted to ask this question?? ;0)

Woman, please!-,r:; There' not one line on your face-you look like a teenager!! I love BareEscentuals, too! Been using it for going on 4 years now...My only regret is not getting into it sooner! I'm an Aveda club member ('coz I just had to have their Rambutan lipstick which is named after a fruit found only in my home island of Cebu..l;, ) b/c of their natural, pure ingredients :)

I'm also a card-holding Sephora Beauty Insider member (told you I was a makeup fiend!) and am going to search for the Velvet Skin primer (right now I'm using Smashbox primer) and I'll look into the Makeup Forever line of eyeshadows!..g.:

I use Milk of Magnesia as deoderant. I wet a makeup sponge with water and use it as the applicator. It's cheap, has no odor, and doesn't mark up my clothing.

LOVE the velvet skin coat by DHC!
I am almost ready to re-order it too.
I also love the makeup remover, the oil one, by them.
I've been using it for years.....
DHC Skincare and Makeup: Olive Oil based beauty from Japan

I use bare escentuals for day, but for everything else, I'm a MAC addict.

Re: Sweaty Face? Try Milk of Magnesia...

Question, do you apply the Milk of Magnesia over moisturizer? What about around the eye and lips? I am 60 and although thank God and good genes I don't have facial wrinkles or crows feet, I do have old acne scars, mild rosacea, and the beginnings of some very fine smile lines. I use primer to even out skin tones and cool down the flushed look.

I use Bare Minerals as a daily makeup during the warmer times of the year and Mary Kay medium coverage foundation during the winter months because it is not as drying. Mineral Veil or Physician's Formula mineral powder over everything.

Re: Sweaty Face? Try Milk of Magnesia...

To answer Carolynn, I haven't had any experience with BE's primers! What type of consistency is it?

I would moisturize first before the MOM as it can be drying. I would also keep moisture around the eyes and lips (great questions), the MOM can pull the skin as it dries. I would concentrate the MOM in areas such as forehead, cheeks, temples, first areas where the sweat would come out of the pores.

For rosacea and the acne scars, if they're both a shade of red, you can try a green-based primer to neutralize the red. You can either mix it with your primer or apply small amounts and then your normal colour coverage over it, blend well. This is inspiring me to post another makeup tip...

I've experienced the Mary Kay foundation and I must say I enjoyed it! It does feel very moisturizing and light, breatheable at the same time.

I've been tempted to try DHC's makeup remover as well! Love their stuff!

Azhia, sorry but I just haven't noticed. I've never really minded the sweating; just the stinking!

That's cool! It's healthy to sweat anyways. But as a deodorant, that is fascinating. I'm gonna have to try. It's great if you don't want to have an overpowering fragrance.

You guys give the greatest tips! I am a head sweater so after about 30 minutes I become a pool. Does any one have any tips for stopping the sweat in your hair from coming down and running down your face?

Head band! Not Bjorn Bork but you know, decorated to match the costume. ;0) Sweat in the eye is the worst!! When I didn't have bangs, I would wear a headband. It also helped with slippery swords. :0)

Talula, you can get it at the pharmacy or a discount store like Target. I've even seen it at the dollar store once. I'm sure Walgreens carries it.

Azhia, this is a great tip! I put MOM on the right side of my face before a hot yoga class to test it out, and it definitely made a big difference! I wore it under my makeup last night for a troupe show, and not only did my face stay drier, but I really liked the matte finish look it gave my skin. Thank you for sharing!!!

    Khalima,

Thank you for reporting your results!

And of course if anybody else tries it, please check for sensitivity. I should have responsibly advised people to first do a test patch on the inside of the wrist or behind the ear to check for allergic reaction or sensitivity. My bad. Please do this first, lovelies...

And if anybody starts to feel constipated while they have MOM on their face, just lick your cheek and you'll be good to go! Ooh...wrong thread again...
