Hello,
I don't usually wear eye makeup because I rub my eyes (trying to break the habit) and my eyes are senitive. Since I don't wear it every day, I'm kinda out of practice when it comes to putting on dramatic eye makeup for a performance. I have dark skin and I don't think applying brown eye shadow would stand out on stage..g.: .
I was wondering if anyone could recommend videos, dvds, youtube videos, books or any type of visual instructions on eye make up. The instruction could go from really basic to advance. I figure, with practice, I could work up to advance eye make ,r:;
Thanks in advance!!!

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
I SO recommend going to a store to get it done and watching carefully.
MAC stores and counters require all their employees to be a licensed make up artist (not all companies do that).
A couple weeks ago I went to a MAC store with a few pictures in tow (Rola, Haifa, Nancy A). "Can you make my eyes up like this and help me find a lipstick in a good juicy nude for me type color? It has to last through dance performances, so has to be water resistant."
She did a phenomenal job, I spent my holiday gift card (and then some) and I learned a few things.

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
i know that mac cosmetics has faces online.. their makeup artists show how they came up with a certain look- ie what color goes where
they usually have different skin shades pictured for their looks so that may help as a starting point

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
One piece of advice, if you don't mind committing to spending $40 or so on makeup--go to a MAC counter and get a makeover (usually you have to commit to buying stuff). Tell the makeup artist it's for the stage so they'll know you need stuff that pops. (I suppose it wouldn't have to be MAC, but I think their artists understand the concept of stage makeup pretty well.) The counter at Macy's downtown would be used to working with any skin tone that appears on the planet

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
Bobbi Brown sells a few books on the subject (probably for more natural looks, though).
I second the suggestion for going to the MAC counter! You can watch while they put it on to see how it's done.

I rub my eyes also. I started using Urban Decay Eye Shadow Primer Potion, and my eyeshadow not only stays on all day, but all night if I forget to remove it. And that includes when I rub my eyes. I can't wear mascara for that reason.

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
There is a wonderful wonderful book called "Making Faces". The first section is makeup instruction, with each topic covered (powders, foundations, eyeshadow, liner, contouring, etc). Then he has these great example "looks", like "The Femme Fatale", "The Ingenue", "The Exotique". It's so much fun to work with.
For natural makeup, I like Bobbi Brown's books, and she actually may have a book specifically about makeup for people of color. I remember paging through it at the bookstore.
Youtube definitely has a lot. Start with MAC cosmetics. I think they have their own youtube channel. I also like to go to their store and get help.

Okay, who has the link to the instructions put out by the adult movie star?
Seriously! We had this discussion on the old bhuz and it was hysterical, but really good info!

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
youtube has some great tutorials on applying eye makeup. you can watch and replay to see exactly how it's done.
going to a makeup counter is nice too for the human interaction, but I find it difficult to observe the technique at the same time as receiving eye makeup.
the adult star is Asia Carrera. a google search should help find her makeup page.

LIME CRIME!!!!!
Scroll down to tutorials. She's got amazing tutorials.
It is good to have a personalized consultation, in addition to the great resources mentioned above. Not all techniques work on everyone's face depending on their features, skin type, etc.

Kevyn Aucoin's books are the best that I've seen. Truly wonderful.
When I went into the MAC store I looked around at all the artists and chose based on their makeup. One woman had faaaabulous borderline drag queen makeup. I knew she'd know what I wanted. ;)

Love that book. It has great ideas.
I have used this tip as well. Aziza Sa'id's FAQ - Makeup
BTW, I like the eyeshadow slut link, cute.

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
A: Mona N'wal: I learned from makeup artists that you should not remove makeup with oil, not even baby oil. It can get in your eye and cause a film (even one molecule thick), causing irritation. Continuous irritation can lead to inflammation and tissue changes. (from Aziza Sa'id's site)
D'oh! I wonder if this is the cause of the tumor-like things (pinguecula) I have growing on the whites of my eyes. Good to know!
Azhia, that Lime Crime site rocks!!

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
Woh, definately stop with the oil makeup remover, then, as it sounds like a likely culprit of your pinguecula. Earth Science makes a fabulous, gel-based eye makeup remover. It contains, inter alia, green tea extract for eye firming, but none of the nasty stuff.
I also use Berts Bees lemon poppyseed cleanser to remove makeup. Just be careful of the poppyseeds (they'll conspire with the tumours in your eyes!).
I know, Lime Crime chick is adorable!

They have a bunch of tutorials, recs, etc.
I recommend straight up practice, though. Watching someone is very helpful, but I only got decent with makeup because I applying it myself.

Re: Eye make instruction ;)
Nothing beats practice, of course, but I want to add to those who suggested Kevyn Aucoin's books. All of his books are wonderful and his instruction is impeccable - he was such a genius and I am so glad that he left those books behind - I've learned so much from them.
In each of her books, Bobbi Brown includes a section on how to make-up the faces of women of color. In "Beauty", she breaks down sections according to Asian Beauty, African American Beauty, Latina Beauty, etc.
Sam Fine, a well-known and awesome Black make-up artist, has his own books, "Fine Beauty". Iman also has one called "The Beauty of Color".

I ask my teenage daughter how to apply make up, she is the make up princess.

Practice is a good thing. Just do it when you have time.
