I was hoping to get a few ideas from ya'll about skirts. I have a few costumes (bra/skirt) that the skirts slip down on me and I have to discreetly pull them up. Any ideas to make them stay put?

How do you keep your skirt from slipping down?

You can sew a band of elastic to the enterior portion of the skirt @ the waist. And a quick fix that I learned and really love is just pinning it to your underwear-I find even the simplest sewing alterations .
Hope that helps!

I have some lycra skirts that I can't sew the elastic in. I use double sided carpet tape to hold them up. It can become a problem though if you swet a lot during dancing.

I just learned this trick: You can sew grossgrain ribbon to the skirt leaving the sides opened, then sew a piece of elastic to the grossgrain that is half the lenght, attaching it to each of the ends of the grossgrain form the inside. That way, the tension doesn't show on the costume itself and you don't get wrinkles from the elastic on your skin. I only sew this on the sides of the skirt and this is enough to keep it in place-- not the back because there's usually a zipper on the back. I still always pin my skirts to my underwear. Hope this helps!

Curious
I've always wondered about pining the skirt to underware...aren't you worried that when you get tipped your underwear gets pulled away from you along with your skirt? .w.:

I have a few skirts I haven't gotten around to sewing elastic into yet (a technique that is beautifully described on Bellydancewithk.com, by the way, at this link: http://www.bellydancewithk.com/bouti...readcasing.htm ). So when I need a quick fix I just use double-sided lingerie tape, and put some tape along the back, sides, and front. I go heavier on the back and sides because that's where the skirt tends to want to ooch its way down.

LOL at Lauren's post!!
I love toupe tape. TopStick brand works great - sooo much better than lingerie tape, won't sweat off, and it's easy to get off your costume. Even comes in straight or curved shape! Local beauty supply should carry it.

I always, always, always always pin my skirt, belt and under together. I use diaper pins. I've come close to losing my skirt before on stage and I've seen it happen to other dancers. I always pin. At the minimum one in the front, and one in the back. If it's a heavier skirt I add pins to the side.

I hope this isn't too stupid of a question...but I've always been afraid to pin my skirt to my underwear because my theory has been that if one falls, both will fall if they're pinned together. Does that worry anybody?

I use to wonder that too but never in almost 30 years of dancing have I had that happened. I have had unpinned skirts fall off and bras pop open and hair pieces fly off, but I've never had my underwear fall off!

I don't like tight underwear. Obviously they stay up under normal conditions, but they wouldn't add a lot of resistance if I stepped on my skirt, and the skirt was pinned to them.

That's what I was thinking, antimony. They wouldn't have to slide far to cause a major embarrassment. An inch would do it. .w.:Obviously they stay up under normal conditions, but they wouldn't add a lot of resistance if I stepped on my skirt, and the skirt was pinned to them.
But obviously it works for a lot of people.

With out see the problem it is difficult to see how to solve the problem
Double sided tape.
Swim elastic – it is rubber so sticks to the skin
Stick on felt – great for the inside of belt.

I always used to pin my skirts to my underwear until I heard a wonderful/horrible story.
A dancer did a level change, from standing to kneeling. Then she jumped right back up to standing again. Unfortunately for her, she stepped on the skirt as she was leaping up, and tada! Raqs Beaver!
So yeah. I don't do that anymore. I'd rather be an unwitting underwear model than an unwitting nudist.

I pin to my underwear as well, but more for skirts or belts that tend to be slipping around me, not downwards.
For those which keep falling down: Sew strong elastics to the top. When it has a zipper you could even add an unstretchy ribbon (like you find on the Bella costumes).
And you know those rubber-like stuff at the top of halterless stockings? Also works with costumes, I once had a costume that kept slipping down in the back just to reveal the buttcrack, sewned stronger elastics and those rubberbands from stockings to it and it stayed up.

the solution for me is 2 pairs of underwear!
I just pin the skirt/belt to one pair and I wear an extra pair underneath. this way if the whole shebang falls down you are still left with covered private bits.
I almost lost a skirt that was pinned to my underwear once, unwanted indecent exposure is the mother of invention they say.

These are great ideas. Thank you. I will try them. I never thought of putting a non strechy ribbon in, duh. (smacks forehead) I have heard of the rubber stuff, not sure if that would do it on it's own with sweaty skin, but maybe that with the ribbon would solve the problem. Yay! ..l;,
Thanks.

You find them on Bella costumes all the time. That's as well why I love them for getting tipped as you are not able to pull them too far away to get a peak at my underwear (I had guys who tried...). But it only works when you have a zipper in the costume, otherwise you won't get in and off any more ..c::
