Thread: Dancers with IUD's?

Hey gals,

For any of you out there with an IUD... Did you experience lightheadedness/near fainting after the insertion? Do you worry that undulations, etc will cause it to shift or perforate? How do you know if it perforates or shifts? I appreciate any help...c::

I don't have an IUD, but personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about undulations. After all, they expect you to have intercourse with them in place, right? If sex wouldn't cause it to move, I can't imagine why an undulation would do it.

I've had one for 7 years. No problems after insertion other than very mild cramps for a few hours. I've never worried about anything dance-related causing it to move.

Thanks for the visual... ..l;, I figure intercourse wouldn't be affecting the top of your uterus the same way an undulation or belly roll would.

No problems here! I was warned about fainting at the time of insertion, but I thought that would be a response to the pain. From what I understand, some patients experience pain or bleeding if perforation occurs, but it is more common that the string disappears. So if you suddenly can't find it for more than 24 hours, then it should be checked by a professional.

Thanks for posting this thread. I'm interested in reading peoples' comments, because I'm getting one put in today. I'm not looking forward to the pain; here's hoping that it won't be as bad as I expect. I wasn't explicitly warned about the possibility of near-fainting, though I think I remember them saying they make ya stick around for 30 minutes after.

I hadn't even given any thought to the idea that dancing might make it migrate. Let's hope that's not the case.

I have had quite an ordeal with my IUD. Can't be on pills anymore as they mess me up, so decided to try an IUD. My doctor didn't tell me until the insertion day that for women who haven't had children it may be very painful at insertion and for a long time afterwards.

So I went ahead with it anyways (couldn't let $100 to go to waste). Didn't faint, but was in A LOT of pin during insertion (they weren't sure they could put it in even with cervical dilation pills taken a few cours before the procedure) and for the rest of the day. Next two days were manageable with painkillers, then on the fourth day I thought I was going to die. After about three hours of intolerable pain to a point of throwing up I decided to go to emergency, and as soon as I got out of bed, the pain disappeared. Go figure! Ultrasound next day showed IUD was still perfectly in place.

I was in a lot of pain pretty much every evening for the three month afterwards, and any time I did any physical activity like running, doing squats, abs and, of course, undulations. There were a few nights where I told myself I'd call the doctor the next morning to get it removed cause I couldn't take it anymore, but then the morning would come, the pain would subside and I feel bad about wasting $100 again (yes, I'm very cheap when it come to anything other than bellydance items :)

I'm pleased to say that I won the battle over my uterus! Now I have to undulate for a long time before I feel any discomfort, but it's not that bad. The pain tends to only come back during the period.

Overall I'm happy I have it so that I don't have to worry about certain things ..g.: For those of you considering geting one: if you had children, you're likely to be Ok, for those who haven't - it might be tough. Oh, and MAKE

SO: MAKE SURE YOUR DOCTOR DOESN'T CUT THE STRINGS TOO SHORT, OTHERWISE YOUR SWEETIE WILL GET POKED :)

I have an IUD and I wouldn't even know it was there.

When I went to have it inserted, the doctor couldn't actually put the sounder thingy in (I have not had children) let alone the IUD and after a few attempts (not painful) gave up and referred me to a specialist so I could have it done surgically. I had a general anaesthetic, my boyfriend at the time came and picked me up afterwards and spent the day and night with me on their advice. I felt weak and weird, but that was due to the anaesthetic.

I had some spotting and a couple of uncharacteristically heavy periods, but after that, back to normal.

I felt really off for a few days after insertion. Just light-headed and spotting... apparently, that's normal, and I was quite fine within a few days.

Undulations are fine. It's made to withstand much more. If it shifts, you may or may not feel it - mine shifted and sat there for two years with Doctor's knowledge. It was fine and did it's job without any complications or discomfort.

Unfortunately, now I'm awaiting surgery to have mine removed because they can't locate the string. rrrrr.... (they just dilate the cervix to retrieve it, it isn't a big surgery but still a pain in the neck).

I've had a Mirena for just 6 months, and the first 4 months were *very interesting*... Now I have no periods at all just some intermittent cramping around ovulation. Feel free to ask questions, I don't think there's enough conversation about IUDs out there.

Good luck Nimah! Let us know how it goes. Move reeeaaallly slow when they tell you it's ok to get up. Can someone tell me what these strings feel like?

Stardancer - smooth, like a fishing line. I have two that i can distrinctly feel, and they are usually coiled up together at the top by my cervix. My Dr left mine longer and said that it will keep them from poking my partner, and be easier to locate. Honestly, my partner has never noticed them (but I've never told him to 'look' for them either).

Oh yeah, one more thing -- I've never had kids, that did make the dilation/insertion more painful than if I had given birth (but I had nothing to compare it to, so whatever)

Plus I am very active on a daily basis -- dancing, cycling, rollerblading, yoga, hiking...activity makes the cramps subside. My Dr said that migration would be very, VERY rare.

I've had my Mirena oohh....3.5 years now. Had a painful insertion and some cramps afterward which are gone now (along with my periods, Yay!!).

I never feel it, undulations and belly rolls don't bother me (unless I've eaten something really spicy, which has nothing to do with the IUD!)

Wow, I didn't realize so many people had pain after insertion! If it makes you feel a little better, I had no problems-and it didn't even hurt that much when it was actually inserted! I wonder if it make a differnce which kind you get-mine was the plain copper, non hormonal kind. I went to planned parenthood, and they've always been great though. Do take a couple of ibuprofen beforehand, I think it helps. Good luck!!

I'm on my second Mirena and can't believe that some people still choose the BC pill over an IUD I also haven't had any children and during insertion experienced a sudden, sharp pain that faded very quickly. Afterwards I felt a little "hollow" and experienced light bleeding for a few days, but no pain. Everyone's experience is different; my friend landed up in hospital with a debilitating cervical infection and was forced to take heavy painkillers for weeks afterwards! (I think her doctor messed up the procedure...)

(If anyone here is looking for a more permanent method of BC that doesn't involve surgery, please look into the Essure. I highly recommend it and the process is no more envasive or painful than having an IUD inserted. I use an IUD in conjunction with the Essure to control bleeding. TMI?)

How long after the insertion did she end up with the infection? How did she come to realize she had an infection?

She was in _incredible_ pain after the insertion, but when she asked about it, the nurses on duty ignored her and basically treated her like she was over-reacting. The pain didn't get any better after a few days and when she went back to her doctor, he said it was normal to have some pain and bleeding; he didn't feel he needed to take a closer look. I think it was more than 2 weeks after that that they finally decided to "humour" her "silly concerns", which was when the infection was found. She had to take time off work because she was on demerol and could barely function by this time.

Remember, her pain was unbearable. Feeling light-headed or faint after insertion _is_ normal. It's when you can't walk from the pain after a few days etc. that there is cause for concern. Of course, you have every right to speak to your doctor if you are worried about how you are feeling and you deserve to be treated respectfully. (My friend decided not to have her Mirena removed and is doing just fine now.)

OMG this is exactly my situation, Well it was anyway. I hated my IUD. The lady that did the insertion did a horrible job. Not only was I in pain for about 3 months, but was bleeding too almost the entire time. I paid $415 out of pocket for mine, and to me, it wasnt worth it because I got pregnant anyway after the damn thing got knocked out of place. So, Im not sure if I would recommend IUD. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I think it was a waste of my money and the fact I got pregnant doesnt help. SO anyway, Im trying Nuvaring now, and Im having a problem with that staying up there too. Dont know what the hells wrong with me (down there) its like birth control is protesting against me or something.,m::

for me i had little pain but spotted for 3 months, now i barely have a period. I have had it for 1.5 years and love it.........im not responsable so it is perfect for me

oh ive never felt the strings but my hubby says they poke him......i had mine put in 6 weeks after my baby i really dont remember pain, and have none now

I have a Merina coil. I can't use the pill at all now as I'm either not allowed to use some brands, and the rest just mess me up. I found insertion to be painful I have to say, and i threw up afterwards, but I haven't had children so that probably will be part of that. There's no reason to not have one if you haven't had children and my GP had no problems with prescribing me one and inserting it, but it does hurt a bit more.

It took me several months to get used to it. I as warned that my periods would be very irrgular for about 6 months (the merina coil has progesterone in it) and I basically bled contiunously for about 4 or 5 months, though I was having Roaccutane at the same time (which is why I had it inserted - you have to use 2 types of contracpetion) so I don't know if that made things worse. It was also uncomfortable for a couple of months while it was settling.

I've had it about 7 months now and it's OK, my periods are lighter, which is great, it doesn't hurt all the time and most of the time I forget I have it. I haven't noticed that dancing has affected it any more than I would have expected, however because my periods are very heavy and painful anyway I have found that dancing during my period can be painful anyway.

I had an IUD for about 5 years and thought it was great. I did experience a little bit of pain for about 24 hours after insertion. My period cramps were a bit more, but other than that no problems whatsoever and I was very, very active.
