I'm wondering if I'm the only one who does this? I get these ridiculous crushes on particular songs then I have to run out and buy half a dozen albums with that song on them.
This started for me a couple of years ago with Aziza. Followed every few months by some other classic. Zeina, Mishaal, Habibi Ya Eyni...
Last week I stuck my whole music collection on shuffle to try and find a song for the next hafla and fell head over heels for Alf Leyla, and am totally about to buy another bunch of CD's. (How the hell do I only have two versions of this song right now. I would have figured with my previous CD binges I should have serendipitously collected more)

Re: Song crushes
Oh yeah. I do that too. Usually though I'm trying to find "the perfect version". Not too long, too short, too tinny, too whatever....
I just blew my money on 30 new CD's to find 1 song for a performance. And I finally found it! Of course, I already own the song in 3 different versions but I finally found the perfect one!
I like the classics too.

Yes, I do that. Thank god for Itunes and emusic, now I don't have to buy a whole album just to get one song any more!

Re: Song crushes
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who does this! I just recently discovered Itunes and am compiling a list of "important/historical arabic songs I should be familiar with" which means finding all the possible versions of about 65 classic songs! I've got a bit of work ahead of me, needless to say.

Re: Song crushes
Same here. A lot of music that I dismissed when I was performing turn out to be exactly what I need now that I'm teaching.
And besides my music library recently got corrupted and I'm have to reload a lot of my CD's. But it is very expensive to keep buying CD's only to have them not be what you want. Those music clips can be very deceiving.

Re: Song crushes
I also find that I'll get a CD for just one song, and then if I take the time to listen to the whole CD (long car rides are great!) I will fall in love with 2 or 3 others. I've discovered much "new" music this way by digging out CDs that I purchased on a whim for one song long ago!

Re: Song crushes
I've been learning so much while making the "song" pages on a site I'm working on (Bellydancedownloads.com). I'm trying to find all the versions for each classic song and put the download links on the page, plus list albums that have the song (which aren't available for download). It has been very inspiring to listen to the many, many versions of each.

Re: Song crushes
I do the same thing! I spend hours and hours searching the Internet and asking around for the "best" version of that song! I listen to it over and over and over until another one comes along! Right now my crush is "Aatbak ala eih" from "Suzy el Helwa" CD. My previous one was "El Helwa bil bara" as danced to by Dina but I just cannot find a single version of that anywhere.
Middle Eastern music is just so beautiful it is hard to choose one favorite!,r:;
