    Zill Choice

So if you could only buy one pair of zills (as a beginner/advanced beginner) which would you choose Saroyan's or Turquoise's? And which style? No fighting ladies!

Hmmmm.... I googled it and got a ton of hits for people selling, is there a direct site or a seller that you reccommend? Modulation Skills?

    Re: Zill Choice

Not to start a figh with Cory, because I love her and I own a pair of Zildjians, if you haven't had a lot of exposure to zilling, I would go with Saroyan zills. Probably Arabesque of Nefertiti's. Only because Zildjians can be a little intimidating. And, depending on the teacher, you may not be able to get the exposure to the advanced technique which Zildjians are great for. My teachers have never taught edge click, etc. I had to go study with an Egyptian to get those skills.

So, I would strongly suggest, at this point, to buy Saroyans. You can always upgrade.

Saroyan Pros in brass; they have a good tone that's not harsh to the ear, and they are loud!

If you start learning, you can't go wrong with zills designed for students by either Turquoise or Saroyan.

Everybody is different, but I don't think that playing zills designed for professional use (whether Zildjians or models by the above companies) is the ideal choice for most beginners. It was beneficial for me to have smaller, easier to handle zills to get started. And, I am certain that my classmates appreciated that my first student zills didn't produce much volume no matter how awkwardly I treated them ;-)

    Re: Zill Choice

I made this choice. I was all set to buy Saroyan zills at a bazaar last year, because I'd heard a lot about them, but when I tried the Turquoise Turkish zills (curved on the edges), I fell in love with their bell-like sound. They cost the same as the Saroyans would have, so price wasn't a factor. It was the sound that sold me.

My instructor really likes my zills, too.

I went ahead and got the Saroyan Arabesque's. I just felt safer because I could actually sample the tones before I bought. I hope that I get a chance to hear the Turquoise at some point cause I might want a set of them too!

The zills I own are a mix of unknown origin and ones I bought because I loved the sound of them when I tried them. Having said that, all my zills of known origin are Saroyans. I will say my absolute favorite set is my Jim Boz pros.
tahiradancer, your going to love them ..g.:

I love my Zildjians too for tribal use. I use Saroyans for Oriental performance. I've been supplying my students with Turquoise student cymbals for a while now through a wholesaler, but might start getting them direct from the source. Anyone do that with either Saroyan or Turquoise? Advice or experiences?

I have two other sets of unknow origon. One set came with some stupid little box that someone got me from Barnes & Noble thinking it was funny (very cheap and I HATE the sound) the other set a friend got for me at a local shop but they don't have any markings or anything. They look a lot like the sets my instructor was selling to students in class. I hope the new ones come today. I can't wait to get my fingers on some that are a step up! If only they would make some that zill for you and you can just look good, kind of like player pianos!

For learning new rhythms or anything really fast, I like to start with my Saroyan mini-zills (I'm 4'11" with small but chubby hands). For sound, I really like my Turquoise Int'l zills because the sound is just bell-like. I've not tried larger Saroyan's though.....that might change my mind :-)
