Pop Music for a Greek Wedding - any suggestions?

    Hi all!

I'm doing a Greek/Italian wedding at the end of the month and the bride has requested some Greek music.

I am toying with using either George Abdo's Misirlou or Ta Mavra Matia Sou mixed with regular Oriental music for the main set but I want some pop to get everyone up and dancing at the end.

I have no Greek pop music, and I'll use Hakim if I can't find anything Greek, but if anyone knows of any crowd pleasing pop-y Greek music available on emusic.com I would be eternally grateful!

Help me make a Greek girl's wedding day perfect! ..l;,

If not available on emusic, I may be able to find it locally if it's a common artist. I'm open to any suggestions! Thanks!

There is the Dick Dale version of Misirlou, ok at least 2 actually. I prefer the one that was used in Pulp Fiction, but there is another one he did with guitar that sounds more traditional.

Re: Pop Music for a Greek Wedding - any suggestions?

    hello
is this a wedding in the States? secondary generation greeks? my boyfriend is greek from australia. and i spent a few months with him in greece. i found that both the greek greeks and overseas greeks love the old classics like Ta Mavra Matia Sou. i showed the arabic version to my boyfriend's relatives they all love it (the superstars version). you don't really need to find new songs. and you don't have to worry about getting people to dance because they all love dancing, especially when they love the song. i think unless there's a very young crowd, they would prefer to dance to 'soulful' music rather than club music. they usually do some very simple steps with their arms up and just feel the music. they get better when they get more drunk. i hope they will play that game that the men would dance and then try to grab a glass of beer on the floor with their mouth and try to drink it all. it's hilarious to watch.

why don't you ask the bride or her family to supply you some cds? i'm sorry i can't help you much. my boyfriend always trys to teach me names of songs and singers but the greek names are all too too long for a chinese girl.

Here's one - Gia by Despina Vandi. Very pop, think it was Eurovision, very bellydance.

Re: Pop Music for a Greek Wedding - any suggestions?

Oh yes one I really like is a Greek version of Haram t'ahibbak or however you write it (I htink the meaning is different in the lyrics though). Very dramatic, great entrance song, classic and pop at the same time. It has "Aspro y Mavro" as the hook line but when I search on that I only get a bad Eurovision song with the title Aspro Mavro. This is NOT it and I will try to find out the name of the good one for you (cos mine is just called track 2 Greek CD on my system), or at the very least upload it here x

The Levendes have a great version of Ta mavra matia sou track 1 of double exposure. The rest of the CD has some great line dances on it. On CD 2 Ligo Liga na sinithis -is danceable.

Also, Welcome to Greektown track Nina Nina Nai -is a compilation of 3 very popular Greek line dances.

You know, I've heard that Nebtidi Mnain El Hikaya song several times before and NEVER made the connection to Ta Mavra Matia Sou until you pointed it out! Neat!

I like that Despina Vandi one, too - found it on emusic

I've heard good things about the Levendes, too -might be able find that locally.

I've got something to work with now - thanks everyone!

Don't know if this helps but when I was in Athens, Greece back in 2004, every single bar/car/stereo was playing Tarkan's Kiss Kiss song. I had also just learned a choreography to it from Jasmine Jahal in Germany a month before so that song has been forever ingrained into my brain! I heard it in my sleep for months after I got back.

Re: Pop Music for a Greek Wedding - any suggestions?

there is a greek version of the kiss kiss song- they are very similar. except of course for the language :-)
are they asking for greek pop or for more traditional? for what is HOT right now, search using the name thanos petrelis, despina vandi, anna vissi
and make sure that you translate it- so you don't use anything too sad, this is a wedding- a happy occasion

Re: Pop Music for a Greek Wedding - any suggestions?

it is a "greek" thing to balance a cup/glass on your head or attempt to lift it from the ground with your mouth. it is usually done during a zembekiko song. this is a slow song. there are semi-traditional steps and hand movements that accompany it. it used to be considered a man's song but women have started to dance to it as well- as early as the 80s/90s I believe the trend began- don't quote me on the dates.

Lefteris Pantazis does version of Kiss Kiss on one of his albums. I tried using it in a restaurant but it's a bit lame/weak sounding in comparison to Tarkan's Simarik. It did make the restaurant owner very happy though.

Wow Maria can't wait til next Bhuz slot later on so I can sit and listen to/watch all those youtubes - thanks for sharing them x

    Maria~

I want to thank you for being such a wonderful resource, and such a wonderful help! I dance in a Greek restaurant, and am very close with the family and will be attending and dancing at a related Greek wedding over the next year, and this thread and all of your music suggestions have been so helpful!

It is helping me add more Greek pop to my restaurant sets, and it is also helping me with planning the dance(s) for the upcoming wedding!

    Hug,

I'd recommend the Levendes, who's songs are available on itunes.

For an opening I like Ligo Ligo tha me sinithis (otherwise known as Oki Oki) from Double Exposure, CD 2. Then I'd follow with Ta Mavra Matia Sou from Double Exposure, CD 1. This version is nicer than George Abdo's version. Most of the other songs on those CD's are great line dancing tunes. But my favorite audience participation number is Nina Nai Na off of their Welcome to Greektown album.
