Greek Music
Just as I was driving into my office this lunchtime I heard the start of a Radio 4 programme about Greek Music and Rembetika Music in particular.
BBC - Radio 4 - Music Feature - The Greek Blues
The Greek Blues
Tuesday 8 July 2008 13:30-14:00 (Radio 4 FM)
Repeated: Saturday 12 July 2008 15:30-16:00 (Radio 4 FM)
Rock critic Peter Paphides goes back to Athens, the city where his parents grew up, to chart the history and roots of Rembetika, the Greek blues. Played on violins, ouds and bouzoukis and featuring extremely impassioned singing, Rembetika is the music of the lower classes in Greece and Asia Minor. Typical lyrics are concerned with lost love, impending death, hashish, sex, prison and gambling.
I'm guessing it will be on the BBC's Listen Again facility, for those who are interested.

Re: Greek Music
I live next to a greek club, and my stepmother is greek orthodox...
so I must say I´ve learned to LOVE the Rembetiko music:)
Thanks for the tips Bea!
P.S.
If you search for music or videos, try spelling it as "REBETIKO"for more results.
Often the rythm is karsilama or chiftetelli,so it is not hard to dance to.

Re: Greek Music
Rebetika are beautifull.
Just be carefull with the dance part, cause they are tricky;)
It might sound dancable but for greeks might be Xasaposerviko, or Xasapiko, or zeibekiko;)

Re: Greek Music
Oh no,I don´t try that at home!
*big smile*
When the ladies at the club dance, they mark the same accents to karsilama/chiftetelli that I´ve been taught to the rythms by my teachers.
But Greek dance is a whole world I don´t know much enough about yet:)
