Name that tune!
The first one you hear:
[ame=http://youtube.com/watch?v=fFDFSl6z14U]YouTube - National Egyptian Dance Troupe - Tour 2007[/ame]
I have a copy on a CD I bought from Faten Salama, but it's just called 'melaya leff' on the track listing -- and the quality is a little rough. I'd like to get an original recording AND I'd like to be able to find at least a rough translation.

I don't know what it's called, but 20 seconds of it put me right back in Faten Salama's meleya leff workshop!

We need to get THTX in here. She is the "Name That Tune" expert.
Sorry Lauren, I'm not able to cough up an answer for you either.

Re: Name that tune!
Well I can't name that tune either. I have a few Cd's but it is always labeled "melaya luff" no specific song id.
I recently got Mohamed Shahin's 2008 workshop CD that has Melya luff on it. I know that he has a workshop DVD choreo available for this music. You can email him for details.

Re: Name that tune!
I saw Lubna do this dance last night in a show! Don't remember the name of the song. I'm sure I have it amongst my CDs .... somewhere.
THTX, where are you???
BTW, the Mohamed Shahin song is different. It's Banat Baharaei (sp?).

Re: Name that tune!
Faten said it's "Banat el Mahroussa". It's on the back of her melaya DVD also.
Best Wishes

Re: Name that tune!
I have the DVD. I also have Faten's CD with the music on it, but it's one of those CDs you often get from the Egyptian teachers, where all the track names have been changed and the quality is poor.
I'd still like to find an original copy of the music and a full lyric translation (Faten translated some of the lyrics at the workshop).
But having a song title will surely help!

Re: Name that tune!
Well, the only thing I've been able to come up with is a translation of the title,Banat el Mahroussa, The Guarded women of Cairo.
I found on Al Ahram that Al Mahrousa means "the guarded" and Cairo is also refered to as al Mahrousa.
Other than that, I've got squat. I don't even know how true what I just typed is.

Re: Name that tune!
Thanks, Michelle. I found Mahroussa mostly as the name of a ship, a racehorse, or a hotel!! I wondered if it was also a city name, a name for Cairo makes lots of sense.
My best guess is that in this case it just means 'girls of Cairo'
