    What rhythm is this song?

It's Ana Fi Intezarek from the Cd Tribute to Om K from the Cairo Orchestra. I say it is a 4/4, what do you guys think? Additionally. has anyone ever heard of a 3/6 rhythm??

If it is the same one I am thinking of, it starts out with DtDDtkt which is a Saiidi. It is interspersed with melodic sections and some stops, but I *think* it carries that all the way through as a 4/4. It is a beautiful song (but if I remember correctly a sad song...I will have to look through my translations to be sure).

I am not sure on the 3/6...I may have to do some research on that one. Anyone else know?

Ana Fi is a 4/4 throughout...mostly Saidi with some other stuff here and there too (wahida, and maybe bolero or rhumba?). I've not heard of a 3/6, only a 6/8 (which occurs in some Om songs, Moroccan music, and some Persian I think).

Ok, I didn't think there was such a thing as 3/6 either, just the 6/8 which is counted in 3's and after listening to the song a couple of times I can't seem to get anything other than a 4/4 out of it. I got this ad for a local workshop emailed to me the other day that got me to thinking about this:

"Choreogrpahy workshop to Oum Koulsom’s “Ana Fi Intezarek”
    Full Choreography
Adhering to a 3/6 rhythm, (the instructor) teaches a combination of dance moves from the Golden Era of Egypt"

If someone really does know of a 3/6 rhythm, please correct me.

You're talking about the little 2 minute version? That section is Saiidi throughout, 4/4 time. (although in some sections the full rhythm isn't played, only the one or one and three).

That's one of my favorite pieces, very sad and lovely.

    Maybe it was a typo?

Nasila, I think you are right; it is 4/4 throughout, but not just sa'idi all the way through; there is definitely wahda in there.

As to the 3/6, my only reaction is, "Whaaaaa????????" Surely a typo.

The first number in a time signature refers to the number of beats per measure. The second number refers to the type of note that gets one beat. There is no sixth note, so there is no time signature that has a 6 as the second number. Notes in a time signature are half notes (2), quarter notes (4), eighth notes (8), possibly sixteenth notes (16) but that is rare. There are also whole notes but they are not used as a number in a time signature.

Within a measure a note can have a dot after it, then its value is increased by one-half, as in a dotted quarter note, for example. In a measure of 4/4 time, a quarter note would get one beat, four quarter notes would make one measure, or four beats. A dotted quarter would be held for one and one-half beats. (Confused yet?)

Thanks for confirming! :) I could only remember the first bit in my head for sure as Saiidi, but I *thought* it held a 4/4 throughout.

Thanks guys for confirming my doubts about the 3/6. I emailed the person who sent it that there might be a tiny typo!

Could have meant 3/8, but a 3/8 feels very much like a 6/8!
