Need Help Finding a Bollywood Song for Gig
I just scored this sweet double gig next month for an Indian wedding: the henna party and the reception.
I got some song ideas from the client for her henna party, but I'd like some suggestions from any of y'all out there in Bhuzland...
What I want is a bollywood song that is upbeat and appropriate for the wedding reception. I will be using the song as my audience participation section, going out into the crowd and getting everyone dancing. So, it needs to be a song that the Indian GP would like and want to jump up and dance to and doesn't contain anything questionable.
Maybe something from Kal Ho NaHo, but I can't help but tear up when I hear a song from that film. LOL..cr.:
Any ideas?

Kajra Re is perfect. They love it and there hasn't been a HUGE smash hit like it since.

Mayya Mayya is also popular. Or something a little older- as I'm sure multiple generations will be there: Badi Mushkil is popular.

I guess Kajra Re would be good. What about Dola re Dola from Devdas? or Aaj Ki Raat from Don ( I'm partial to the version from the SRK remake) cos that's a party song for sure.

Kajra Re is great! Never fails to get the audience dancing. An older crowd especially might like Mehbooba Mehbooba (I have a video of that posted, and also one of Mayya Mayya with wings - loooooove Mayya Mayya!). I have also danced to Chand Sifarish, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Touch Me, Chaiyya Chaiyya, and Dedar De with excellent results! My husband is in a bollywood band so I get tons of music from him, and I live in an area with a large Indian community, so I make good use of the songs. Good luck - I find watching Youtube videos of the songs helps because you can throw some things from the video in with your dancing.

I really like this one: Om Shanti Om from Deewangi Deewangi [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HU2QxGzPB58]YouTube - Om Shanti Om - Deewangi Deewangi[/ame]
It's got a chorus in English that's good for audience participation:
'All the hot girls put your hands up and say, Om Shanti Om; All the cool boys come and make some noise, Om Shanti Om.' Also good consistant beat thats easy to dance to.

I second Deewangi Deewangi (aka Om Shanti Om). It's a big crowd pleaser. You can get it on iTunes.

Re: Need Help Finding a Bollywood Song for Gig
hey anna!
I'm in a bollywood troupe now (loving it!!!), and we do sets to dola re and dedar de. we're going to use om shanti om for our curtain call at a big show we have coming up - love that song! but I ADORE dedar de. omg. love it. I use it for tip music all the time, for non-indian audiences (I like to have persian, indian, arabic and turkish music for tipping for my general shows - you never know who will be in the audience and they always love it if you surprise them with something they know...). it's just a hot, fun song that I can't sit still to.
we did dola re for a wedding, and I felt odd about it - it's about a woman who was not allowed to marry the man she loved, and a prostitute! didn't seem appropriate. ;) they liked it though. that audience also loved chand safarish.
right now we're working on a beautiful song called barso re. it's about rain. :)
