Rebirth/Reawakening
I'm looking for a good song for a piece I'd like to create for a persephone myth type story--something that evokes a feeling of rebirth, reawakening, re-emergence. Is there an arabic "amazing grace" (lol)....

Hmmm, I don't know about an Arabic song that does what you want. The first song that came to mind when I read your message was "Journey's End" by the band Solace, on their CD Gathering Season.
You can hear a short clip of it on my web site at Music Review: The Gathering Season by SolaceLast edited by *Shira*; 01-14-2009 at 10:52 AM.

Check out Stellamara - their latest CD, which I believe is called the 7 Valleys - I think several of those pieces may work for you - and there's even one named for Persephone :)

Lol. I already went through all my Solace! I was contemplating "Cybele" since Cybele is a fertility godess associated with the classic birth-death-rebirth allegory but...
What I really want to use is amazing grace by the blind boys of alabama. I was hoping to find something that soulful...it doesn't need to be arabic per se, I was being fascetious about an arabic amazing grace

Maybe something by Georges Lammam?

I'd say a nice baladi progression could be what you're looking for.
The first track on the baladi CD of Hossam Ramzy's "Best of Baladi and Saidi", which is called Elmalek something, is lovely and has some nice nay as well as your usual accordion and drums. It's 15 minutes long though.

..g.: Guess what I'm listening to at the moment? Elmalek Farouq (King Farouq). I'm doing a lot of Baladi at the moment, because something finally clicked, but that's a different story. So I'm biased, Baladi could work (providing you and your audience aren't purists about this). But you might have to cut this down - it's nearly 16 minutes long.
