Thread: what is this Melaya song about?

I'm calling on the infinite wisdom of the bhuz hyvemind We're preparing a duet melaya piece on the song in this youtube clip, but we don't know what the text is. Do you know the original name of this song, or what the song is about?

Another dancer told me that this is a typical melaya song so you can use it without getting into awkward situations. Several times in the song the singer is singing 'melaya'. It's the song in this clip with Viktoriya:

Has a good feel for milaya lef - but sorry I can't help you with the words - other than to say I couldn't hear "milaya" any where in the song. I was also disappointed that the dancer didn't actually dance with the milaya but just used it as a prop to discard.

I'm pretty sure I have seen this before, on some US compilation DVD, and IIRC there is a bit more dancing with the melaya on that comes first. I think she starts with mandeel and burqa too and it all comes off. BUT I could be mixing it up with something else.

This song is actually titled Meleya Leff on a CD - I think it's Raks Ayoub.

oh, bummer. I was hoping it was this other bassem ayoub song I've used for melaya - ya banaat bahri - because then I could have helped a little. the one I know is about guys competing for the attention of girls at the beach. so fun. :)

just wanted to let you know that I didn't find a translation (yet), but it's good to see more dancers are interested in finding out.

I have done this song a looong time ago. I have actual translitteration and translation, but those are in Finland. So here is only the basic story.

The music is from Al Nour CD by Shahrazad & Bassam Ayoub

Meleya Liff (trad. Egyptian)

It's basicly about a boy following a girl on the street (and we so love this NOT!)

In chorus part boy is calling to girl that she is pretty, wearing meleya etc.
And the girl answers that he will tire his legs by running around and following her.

In the first verse boy asks her to come and talk with him and she answers "la, la.." - no
Then they say that lets make everyone else jealous (because she is talking with him) and be unhappy (on fire). Again she answers "la, la..." - no

The second verse boy asks her to go to cinema with him. She says "That's a old thing, don't you have anything new."
Then the boy asks her what she want's. And she answers "Shabka wa hala barima" - Engagemant jewerly and round earings. (So she want's to get married first, before anything else. She is a good girl.)
Then the boy tells her that it's ok. Even something expensive will be cheap (meaning that he can get the money for it).
