Need a pensive/sad song
Hi,
I have a friend who is in a play portraying a woman in an area in the middle east where women are not free to expres themselves openly and have few freedoms. She wants to sing a sad middle eastern song that might convey some of these sad and repressive feelings. The closest I could come up with for a sad/pensive song is "Leesa Fakir." Can anyone come up with anything else that I can pass onto her?
Thank you.Last edited by Lisa Michelle; 04-16-2009 at 05:34 PM.

"Lissa Fakir" is sad, but it is about someone who is remembering a lost love - nothing to do with freedoms. I don't know of any Arabic songs which talk about women's feelings about their freedom directly or indirectly. Maybe someone else knows of some song or songs which refer to personal freedom indirectly.

Re: Need a pensive/sad song
I know of very few Arabic songs that are NOT sad.
I suspect your friend will be happy with anything that sounds foreign and miserable, frankly. But also, Arabic music is HARD to sing. To try and sing something like Lissa Fakir - which to me is quite good, because it's not "boo hoo my man is gone" so much as "do you remember how when we were together you stayed out all night and hurt me, because *I* do, pal, and I'm not forgetting" - is really really difficult, even for a western singer with a lot of talent and skill.

Re: Need a pensive/sad song
I adore Esmaooni. The song is from the point of view of the woman whose lover or former lover disavows even knowing her when people ask about her. No we were never together; I don't know her; I've never even met her, etc.
The singer implores the listeners to tell her what to do, what should she think, how should she respond, why is this happening.
I can so relate to this feeling of complete rejection by someone. I think this is one song where maturity and life experience can add so much.
