Thread: Sha'abi Artists/Singers?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for some Sha'abi music but I don't really know what to look for specifically (artists, songs, etc..) Any suggestions??..g.:

This is a little out of date, but still useful: shaabi: Afropop Style -- Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, North Africa

Hakim, Saad, and Hoda have all released music in cooperation with BDSS and MC, so those recordings are generally regarded as safe for dancing. Some of the more "ethnic" shaabi music may have political themes (e.g., Shaaban's "I Hate Israel"), so you should investigate the lyrics before choosing a song for performance. Also, if you pop over to the Saad thread that is currently running on Bhuz, you will notice that sometimes even the "safe" music is loaded with double entendres in their lyrics. Research first and choose wisely!

Definitley don't want that "I hate Isarael" song since I am Jewish and my name is Hebrew haha that wouldn't be too smart! Yikes!

For a little older shaabi, take a look at Ahmed Adaweya's stuff--Salamit Om Hassan, Bint el Sultan, Baladi Awad are all easy to find.

I actually got one of his cds after reading about him online, I love it ..g.: Great voice and really danceable and cheeky
