what is your favorite version of "ya ein mouletain" aka "shashkin"?
I'm looking for a rocking recording of this song. If there are vocals, I prefer they be the Arabic words.
Ya Ein Mouletain or Shashkin

My favourite is the Heffner remix on the Momo Arabesque cd.

Hands down and without a doubt, Erkin Koray - the coolest, best ever. Alas, very Turkish.
I also really like Zein Al-Jundi's version.

You inspired me to work on my "Ya Ain Moulayeten (Shashkin)" page for BellydanceDownloads.com. I'll keep adding to it as this thread grows.

A few more for Kiyaana, all of which I am not as fond of as the above:
- Ma3 on the Arabesque 2/Fire Dance CD
- Raquy and the Cavemen on Jordan
- Edessa on Bereket
- Salatin Al Tarab Orchestra has a super-super shortie on Bellydance 2000
- the same have a longer version on Casbah
- Kairo by Night on Hadiya
- The Andelus Ensemble on Masters of Bellydance 2
I also have two vintage, probably hard to find fun versions of that song:
- The Sultans on the Ethno-Cabaret Album
- Abbud Abdel Aal & His Golden Strings has a version with a really sweet drum solo

I like the version from Blue Nile, but I believe that's out of circulation now -- unless you can find one of their old vinyl albums somewhere . . .

I love this version by Ya Ein Mouletain by Elias Sarkar & Amir Naoum but that might be because I hear them play it live so often and they are some of the NICEST musicians to work with!

The Fares Karam debke version is pretty groovy. I happened upon it via YouTube and haven't been able to find it on any albums.

Re: what is your favorite version of "ya ein mouletain" aka "shashkin"?
The versions I like have already been mentioned on this thread (Omar Faruk Tekbilek and Mary Ellen Donald's "Gems"). But, I thought it would be fun to tell of seeing this song used at an Egyptian wedding I went to in 2007.
When the DJ put this song on the sound system, here's how people danced to it...
About 5 teen-age girls formed a line, side-by-side, holding hands. A similar number of guys formed a second line, facing them, also holding hands. Each line took three steps forward, toward the other line, and on count 4 raised the unweighted knee, then they took three steps walking backward and raised the unweighted knee on count 4. They went forward again, and then as they went backward the lines kind of dissolved into chaos and generic belly dancing, with the girls on one side of the room and the guys on the other.
Over the course of the 5-hour evening, the DJ played this song about 4 or 5 times. And every time he played it, everyone did exactly the same thing as before.
This wedding involved three nights in a row of parties. Every night the DJ played this song multiple times, and every night the teen-agers danced to it exactly the same way.
On another note, the DJ also played the Macarena multiple times every evening. Egyptians do the Macarena the same way we do!

Okay, so far, my two favorites have been the Samira Tawfik and Fares Karem version. The others just seem to have weak instrumentation or are too slow.

Discovered another version today that I like - [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Tabla-Al-Mezmar/dp/B002TFD2EA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dmusic&qid=1265860344&sr=8-1]Amazon.com: Tabla Al-Mezmar: Wael E.Mahallawy: MP3 Downloads[/ame] It's on eMusic, too. I would assume iTunes as well.

I love the version that Randa Kamel does a combo to on Little Egypt's "Oriental Workshop Miami, Florida May 2006" DVD. Unfortunately, this isn't very helpful unless you have this DVD to listen to it.
I'll have to listen to it again. There is one posted on Bhuz's media, I believe. It may be the same version. Anyone have this DVD and know which version I'm talking about??

It's on Volume 3.
For those who may be interested, there's a review of the Gems CD's on my web site at Music Review: Gems of the Middle East, by Mary Ellen Donald and Mimi Spencer with a complete list of the songs appearing on each volume.

I really like and am currently using the version from Middle-Earth Ensemble. No vocals but a good speed.

Hello dancers - I'm looking for a translation of Ya Ain Mulayatin - the Arabic version - into English. Heck, even Arabic lyrics only would help.
My Google-fu is failing me today.
Thanks!
