    Drum recommendations

I am thinking about getting a drum and taking a few classes to help me get the rhythms down a bit better. I was looking on ebay and they have quite a few sizes and types. I have no idea what I am suppose to get! What determines what size and material are best?

The ones with an Alexandrian heads are better. There are some that come with a similar synthetic head but with no symbol on it that don't sound as good. For now definitely avoid any natural heads, you don't want to have to worry about tuning your drum every time humidity levels change.

This is a handout I wrote some years back. It's probably out of date, as I haven't re-read it in years and I know there are new drums available. But a lot of the information should still be good.

    Enjoy!

The consensus seems to be that a cast-iron drum with a rounded rim and a synthetic head (mylar or fiberskin) is by far the best choice, in terms of comfort, ease of use and durability. You want to look for an Alexandria drum, or a similar model.

I always recommend Touch The Earth (Touch The Earth-Drums, Carpets, Beads, Esoterica, Spirithaven), I trust the owner, and I have often seen the place recommended by musicians. You will have to call, though, their website isn't quite up to snuff, which is too bad. But, fun people to talk to.

    Re: Drum recommendations

You want it heavy, like over 4kg/8.8pounds.

If the drum is too light you will have a hard time keeping it stable on your lap as you strike it.

As for size, depends how long your fingers, arms and torso are. This is wear it helps to go into a shop to try out different sizes, like if you a buying a pair of shoes.
