Good drumming dvds?
Does everybody like Karim Nagi the best, or are there others? Just got a drum...I know all the basic rhythms, but not how to "properly" play the drum....
I have a musical background (I've played 5 different instruments) so nothing too mind-numbingly slow....

I LOVE Adam Basma. Issam Houshan is really good too, as well as Hossam Ramzy. Just to name a couple. Let me go to my resource library!! ,r:;

Re: Good drumming dvds?
I have two drumming dvds

and

These are both beginner drumming dvds but both Souhail and Carmine have other intermediate dvds too.

Re: Good drumming dvds?
Dhavir productions is about to put out an amazingly good instructional Tabla dvd with Faisal Zedan. I've been privileged enough to see some preview footage and I have to say it is one very much worth looking forward to.

Re: Good drumming dvds?
I have Uncle Mafufo's DVD and found it fairly easy to follow and refer back to it often.

Re: Good drumming dvds?
These are the DVDs I have
Uncle Malfufo
Amir Naoum Chehade
Souhail Kasper's vol 1 and 2
The Quick Guide to Playing Doumbek
Karim Nagi
Raquy
For an absolute beginner I would point them to Uncle Malfufo only because his explanation of technique is the most useful and takes into consideration that what works for one person may not work for someone else.
I quite like Amir's dvd because I like the sound of his playing and the presentation of his playing technique. That is the technique looks as good as it sounds.
Souhail's stuff is fairly good as well.
I'm not a huge fan for Karim's suk technique, it sounds flat but that could possibly be because the microphone is not picking up the sound properly. Hard to tell. However my real issue with the dvd is that the Ka technique he teaches is different from the Ka technique he uses himself when playing at normal speed.
The Quick Guide to Playing Doumbek by Todd Roach has completely the incorrect Suk technique. Doesn't sound and look like the correct technique.
Raquy's material is ok I suppose, just slighly unconventional. Might be good if you are a "tribal" drummer.Last edited by HubicRuzz; 09-16-2009 at 02:01 AM. Reason: title correction

Re: Good drumming dvds?
just to get you excited a little here are a couple clips of Faisal - one he is just playing, the other demonstrating 3 styles of rolls. (He's not really breaking down basic technique here, but he does in the dvd that's coming.) This footage will mostly just demonstrate how hot a player Faisal is:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d37yoBGHY7g]YouTube - Faisal Zedan with Qarshi (finger rolls) in 3 ways[/ame]
I think you should get whatever dvds you want for now, there are a few good ones out there but when Faisal's comes out, get it too! <3Last edited by shems; 09-16-2009 at 10:41 AM.
