    Song advice

I have to dance with live music for the first time. I'm dancing to one song so I've got one shot to impress. What is a popular classic that is has a lot of changes and most bands know?

My advice is to ask the band what they like to play for dancers. They will do a better job of a song they are comfortable with, and therefore you will too!

Totally agree with Tamra. And my advice is to have a routine you are comfortable with, and then let it flow with whatever the band plays. You can adjust the speed based on what they are playing. Just find the rhythm first and go from there. You can also buy 10 Songs every belly dancer should know -

I've heard these songs every live performance I've done or attended. Good luck!

Come prepared with a list of songs that you like then ask what the band knows. If you have the opportunity, talk to them ahead of time. Assuming you're dancing to a ME band, most bands should be able to play classic songs like Abdel Halim songs such as Sawah or Zay el Hawa.

However, a friend of mine is re-entering the dance scene. She's used to full bands who know how to play the classics. Now she is working with a keyboard player and maybe a drummer. They don't know any of the classics. just pop songs. They basically told her "who cares" just shimmy and shake it baby!!!!

    She's pretty much horrified.
