So is that tek tek Dum (pause), which would be a 4 rhythm, or is it a 3 (no pause)? Is it slow or fast. Curious!

If it's at the beginning, it's fast. The only part that is slow is the Ayoub portion.

Or it could be short short long, tek tek dum, which would be a 2-count. I can hear that one being fast in my head.

    Zamora or Gayii? Anybody know?

Here I uploaded what it sounds like from the dvd
    this is the practice portion

I tried to upload it on bhuz but it only accepts mp3

    [ame=http://www.zshare.net/download/6725009532dcd4b0/]zSHARE - hasha.m4a[/ame]

Listen to it! It's too hard for me to explain what I hear!
I think I only hear 1 dum on there!
and sorry for the crappy quality!

Oh, thanks gayiii. I hear Dum tek a tek tek a, Dum tek a tek tek a

and some rolls and embellishments, but that's the basic thing that I hear.

Thanks a lot! Nothing like actually hearing a rhythm, they are hard to explain in writing.

Is that where it sounds like a drum roll and there are three beats - dum, dum, dum - then a final 1-2-3-4 real fast? Then the malfouf starts up again, right?

I encountered this rhythm last Spring while writing a musical analysis of "Howa Sahih" and finally found the name for it on Nourhan Sharif's "Arabic Rhythms Volume Eitneen: The Drums of Lebanon".

"Hagaah", which Nourhan pronounces "Haja", ("j" like the second "g" in "garage"), is a 4/4 rhythm. According to the CD's liner notes, "the beat originated in Palestine, where its strong folkloric character attracted it to the various tasks in Lebanese music. Ranging from traditional dances to country style singing, Hagaah is known for its dramatic character when played in subtle speeds".

Are we talking Hagallah or Hasha? I'm still confused - is it the same thing, just pronounced differently?

No Hagallah. She said 'Hagaah' which looks a little like Hagallah but has no L's in it. So no more alike than 'door' and 'dollar' really.

Lebanese pronunciation would use a soft J sound, so 'hajaah' which sounds like 'hasha' or 'hotcha'

All the crazy spelling variations come from English-speakers trying to interpret what they hear Arabs saying.

She doesn't really say "Haja" but more like "Hazha". The "j" is softened.

Yes, exactly. I realize that people pronounce "garage" differently, so it's not a good example really. A better equivalent to the soft "j" sound in "Hagaah" would be the "s" in "casual", "pleasure", and "vision", for example.
