    What's this rhythm?

I'm choreographing to a track on Beata/Horacio's Oriental Fantasy volume 10 (Egyptian Love Affair)

I'm using track 4, Arabian Dream and from 4'51'' there's a rhythm that I can't work out. It sounds like a 2/4 and it just goes da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM continuously.

It sounds sort of Nubian - certainly I find I want to do a Nubian or Khaleegy step to it, but it's definitely not Khaleegy rhythm.

I'm flummoxed as to what it is. ..c:: Any ideas?

I don't have that track, but just to throw something out - could it be a variation of a Fellahy?

    Hi Sunshine,

I just listened to that track.

It sounds like Ayoub with a subtle extra 'da' inbetween first and second dums to me . . .

I wondered about ayoub but it sounds more sort of four square than an ayoub - but maybe you're right and it just has an extra 'da' in between the Dums.

(sunshine potters off to have another listen to her rhythm CDs)

    Hiya Charlotte,

I remember there was a funny ol' rhythm on Jalilah's Raks Sharki vol 4, which could possibly be the one, it was called Vox, I think it just went some thing like "dum tek dum tek dum tek dum tek dum tek dum tek dum tek". I remember reading that Mohammed Abdul Wahab used it a lot.

    Hope this helps a little!

Woo hoo! That's a great CD, isn't it?

I'm not as good with rhythms as I'd like to be, and that CD is one I refer to often. Vox is a great rhythm, and that is a beautiful song!

If you are talking about the last rhythm of the first song on this video clip, it is Ayoub

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced it is Ayoub.

Vox the dum da dum da is evenly spaced, whereas in this oriental fasntasy piece the first 'da' is after the second half of the beat

I think the Ayoub is syncopated while fox is equal distance between doum and tak much like a clock ticking.

Well I guess ayoub would fit with where it comes in the piece - at the end.

It's just that I thought Ayoub had two dums after the tak whereas this definitely has a tak to every dum (this does sound like a very funny conversation!)

But yes, that's the piece alright

Well, Egyptian rhythms are made up of dums (deep-sounding beats) and taks (higher sounding beats) the different rhythms give different 'feel' to the music and encourage the dancer to dance in a particular way.

    As you go on through the different levels of my classes you'll be gradually introduced to the Egyptian rhythms. And soon you'll be dum-ing and tak-ing with the rest of us ,r:;

That is correct as well. The version you speak of is the open version of Ayoub

    1-+-2-+-|
    D---D-T-|

The version in the song is

    1-+-2-+-|
    D--TD-T-|

And while I'm on a roll, fox is

    1-+-2-+-|
    D---T---|
