    Need some new tunes

I'm in the mood for some new music. Need something juicy and Egyptian, with violins and oud.

    Any recommends?

How traditional do you want? I am fond of Nagwa Fouad's "Princess of Cairo." It is pretty traditional.

Got that. That's the problem. I have about 200 albums. Its hard to find new stuff. It seems like all the new additions to maqam, hollywood music, rashid music, etc. are remixes and pop, or compilations of stuff I already have on other albums.

Also, as much as I like the vintage stuff, I crave something with the sound quality of today.

What I want is something along the lines of George Lammam's stuff. Small band, real instruments, high quality recording. I love his Fyom we Leylah. I have been considering his new album Dreaming the Diaspora, but I'm not sure how danceable it actually is.

    {heavy sigh}

Hey, Sedonia. I don't have any of these, but based on Bhuz recommendations, if I were looking for juicy Egyptian music that's not readily available on the big sites, I'd probably contact Outi (here on Bhuz) about ordering her CD. (maybe we could order together & share the shipping cost?)

    Or Leyla Lanty.

I REALLY liked the music on Jim Boz's CD at the workshop I attended with him, too, but I only got to hear one song, I think.

Do you already have the Leila of Cairo CD's? Not small band, but definitely modern quality version of old classics...and many a beautiful mawwal.

    Hi Ssipes!
I have the same problem as you. I call it my "existential musical crisis".,f::

I can recommand you Outi's CD, Sukara of Leila, Dancing with the Genies from Yasmine, both Asala from Arabesque Company (good folkloric selections), Raks Dejah from Bassem Ayoub (excellent baladi and oriental pieces), and the new of Yasmina of Cairo Aheb Masr! (on which you will find a great song called Ala Hisboadad).

Leila of Cairo's CD's are wonderful. As is Outi's.
I absolutely love the Jalilah series, but I'm sure you have them.
    4 is just rhythyms and snippets of songs, so go with 1 -2 - 3 - 5 - 6

Suhaila's CDs, her first three, are wonderful. They are traditional.
Raks Ayoub, calssical egyptian bd by bassem ayoub is good.
Beata and Horatio's CD s are nice.
Nourhan Sharif's raks sharqi cd's are really good too.
I know I can think of more, but i need to go have my coffee first.

I had that in my hollywoodmusic shopping cart last night, then I cancelled it so I could garner opinions here first.

Bassam Ayoub's Alwan min Alsharq CD's are good too. Vol. I and Vol. II are both worth having.

Well, I just dropped a chunk of change at serpentine.org Got both Leila CD's, her DVD, and Yasmine's CDs Cry to the Moon and Dancing with Genies.

Hoping this will satisfy my longings. Now I just have to wait for them to get here, dang it!

This was my other suggestion as well but with your vast library, Maria is likely correct in saying that you probably already have them. What about Dahlal's site? She often has some CD's that I don't see other places.

I have not heard of this one Kina. Is there an MP3 or similar clip of any of the music on it anywhere?

Posted elsewhere at some point - Amir Sofi's latest CD. Really nice orchestrations - easy to identify rhythms (except for one as I recall) - nice music. It is not all tabla all the time. It puts me in mind of the Raqia series of CDs.

You have Bahaia's CD right? It's not new but just checking....

You can buy Aher Masr! at www.aladdinscave.com (in UK) and I bought Outi's here on Bhuz, I contacted her directly via a private message and I paid with Paypal.
For the rest, I bought it at Dahlal except Dancing with Genies that I bought directly from Yasmine at www.serpentine.org

Also, Ssipes, since you like oud and violon, I think you will like Cry to the Moon that you bought. You might also purchase Taksim The Art of Arabian Solos (for the oud) at Peko or Oud Mosaics but I didn't hear this last CD.

The cost (with shipping) from Aladdin's Cave comes to $31 and change! Ouch, and darn this weak dollar!

I wish someone would figure out a way to get Outi's CD here in bulk and sell it at an affordable amount. The $30 is a bit OTT. I'm dying to hear it though.
