Q for Daret El Ayam fans
Last spring, I choreographed the version from the On Fire CD. I love love love the trembly oud that comes in about 1:52 on that version & goes on forever, because layering is one of my strengths as a dancer (I think).
But I just don't like the opening of this version of the song.
I'm falling madly in love with Mahmoud Fadl's version for the wonderful, sweeping, waltzy feeling and juicy vocals & accents. But it doesn't invite the wonderful layering.
Is there a version that offers both? The only other version I can find on e-music is a modern remix.

Try the full version of the Cairo Orchestra's rendition on the Arabian Legends CD. It's long, but you can cut it to include/exclude certan parts. I always love Cairo Orchestra's stuff the most - they do a great job.

My Egyptian friend Ali gave it to me a few years back, he brought it back from Egypt for me.
You might be able to search for it.
has an absolutely beautiful version, with vocals however it's over 9 minutes. but it's so gorgeous.

the Cairo Orchestra version *IS* the On Fire version...it just includes the first 4 minutes of the song (On Fire starts abruptly half way in). However, there are no vocals on the Cairo version.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Daret on Leila's CD. The vocals are amazing, but it doesn't quite get into the same big layered beledy section that's in the On Fire/Cairo version.

Thank you for the info! I listened to a clip of the beginning of the Cairo Orchestra (full) version & I really liked it. I think it's the abrupt beginning of the On Fire one that I don't like. I wonder if I'd be able to find a better place to cut it in?
Where can I get Leila's CD?

I've been wanting Bassem Yazbek's CD, this might be a good reason to go ahead and order it.
Maqam has that one, but not the Leila one. Dahlal has Leila but not the new Bassem.
Anyone know where I can get both in one swell foop?Last edited by Lauren_; 09-23-2007 at 02:12 PM.

I got both of my Leila CD's from Amazon. Eep - Target even carries her now! But neither of them have Yalla Ya Bassem...

I always use the Cairo Orch. version - I cut it down to about 4 minutes or so - I like it a lot, but i will definitely check out these suggestions. Thanks ladies!

Emusic has a fairly newly ripped album called Oum Kolthoom: The anniversary tribute, by Nasareth Orchestra that has a 17 minute track of Daret al ayam.
And Lauren, I know what exactly what you mean about needing sweeping waltzy juicy stuff interspersed back and forth with the textural oud and kanoon that calls for layered shimmies (I think the strummy stuff in the On Fire version is a Kanoon). I am getting so picky I just don't want anything that can't give me both.

Sedonia, you sooo get me.
What's your favorite song (version) with both? It doesn't even have to be Daret any more. I just want to sweep around and then quiver. Preferably Umm K but even that's optional at this point.
(p.s. and check your e-mail, I just sent you an important question)
Bahaia, is there someplace I can hear clips of your CD?

Right now I'm loving George Lammam's Fe yom wi leylah, which has a violin, an oud, and a drum, and nothing more. I'm considering doing it at the November show, but its 9 minutes long, and that's 9 minutes of elegant simplicity with no dramas, mini drum solos, saiidi riffs, fireworks, etc. Do you think the GP will appreciate such? There is absolutely no way to hack it up and make it shorter.
Hey, just so we don't show up at the same event sweeping and quivering to the same piece!I just want to sweep around and then quiver. Preferably Umm K but even that's optional at this point.

Ummm, do you want me to be honest here or do you want me to anticipate what you'd like to hear? .w.: I hate when I fall in love with an uncuttable song. ..cr.:
That could be a problem, couldn't it? ..l;, Maybe I'd better stick with Daret, at least until after November.
Hey, just so we don't show up at the same event sweeping and quivering to the same piece!
..l;, Not at all! I have no sense of time, so it really didn't matter anyway. Just wanted to get it right on my website.

Lauren,
When we did our little "Bhuz project" on this music, I had two ideas for it. One was to simply wait and let that first minute or so go by as dramatic entrance. I'm not sure how much of the beginning you dislike as it repeats anyway (as I recall but it's been awhile). I also thought about just editing that start out and starting it at or after the first repeat which was easier on my ear than the beginning beginning.
All that to say, I think you could futz with that music and get something workable.
I ended up working with the On Fire version after listening to several and trying to dance to them. I did love the one on Ya Bahaia as well, but it has a different "vibe" to it if that makes sense.

Love Daret Al Ayam and I ended up using the On Fire version recently as well. I felt that the Ya Bahaia version didn't have enough depth for me. My guess it because it was played by a small band, rather than an orchestra, because it reminds me of a band from Utah, Kairo by Night.

I was thinking about the difference between the Nasareth Orchestra version (which I downloaded yesterday - I love bhuz), and the one on Leila's CD. I like them both, however I've noticed that the Leila one has more of a deep-gooey feeling, and requires more syncopated - moving in treacle type movements, whereas the one by the Nasareth Orchestra has more cooing swallow type things on it, that lends itself to shimmying over other moves. I love both of them, and they both give a different feeling.

Re: Q for Daret El Ayam fans
I recently found a nice waltzy version on Tarek Al Bacha Belly Dance. It's an instrumental 6:32.

Nesma Al Andalus has a cd out that has the full (I think) version cut into nice manageable chunks that is breathtaking. I got it on emusic, it's called Memories of Cairo.

Re: Q for Daret El Ayam fans
I used Darat for Hadia's pro course last summer. (It got to dance to it with a live band - yay!). She referred me to a gorgeous version on Nesma's Memories of Cairo CD. There are 3 separate tracks on that CD of the different parts of this piece of music. Totally worth the purchase (available on Amazon) as are all Nesma's CD's.

Re: Q for Daret El Ayam fans
I don't remember! I usually use rashid.com, maqam.com, dahlal.com, amazon or cduniverse. I didn't see it come up in a google search. I didn't recognize any of the sites that did show up. I got it about a year ago. I occassionally stray if it's a hard to find CD.
