Raw Rythms
I want a cd, 1 cd that has JUST the drum rythms,
cifiteli
karshlama
ayub
baledi
etc.....
Does any one know where i can get these? I ordered one that I thought was going to be like that but it ended up being kinda techno
Thanks

I like the 'Oriental Grooves' (don't worry they are just 3-5 min of just drums at different speeds, no 'grooves'! set of 2 by sayed balaha. He doesn't have karshlama though but all the other standard ones you could want. I noticed he now has an ebay store so should be easy enough to get hold of the Cds now (previously you had to get them from a random website in germany).
Jalilah's Raqs Sharki 4 has the best range of rythmns I've seen but still no Karshlama (I know nothing about Turkish ryhthms, don't flame for the spelling!). The tracks on that are all less than 1 min i think though.

I know that the "Shake me ya Gamal" CD has different rhythms on it. I don't recall all of them off the top of my head. It's not expensive either.
*edit* Just checked and it has the following:
Saidi
Malfoof
Maqsum
Ayoob
Khaliji
Fallahi
and Various rhythms combinedLast edited by Michelle75; 10-04-2007 at 07:50 AM.

My favorite for pure rhythm is Uncle Mafufo's 25 rhythms. I like the way he counts out each rhythm and speaks the 'dums' and 'teks' for you, then begins drumming it, gradually building speed & intensity.
I also use Jalilah's rhythm CD, but it's not what you're asking for. It has the rhythm for a few seconds, then play clips of songs with that rhythm. Useful for learning to identify the rhythms in context of a song, though.
Nourhan's rhythm CDs are excellent, too. She names the rhythm and its time signature then counts, in English then in Arabic, then the rhythm plays for a good long time, like four minutes.

Samasem's Drum rhythms for Oriental Dance is the one I like best.

I second Uncle Mafufo, as he gives variations of all the rhythms in a usable form. There's also a CD called Arabic Rhythms that says the name of the rhythm in English and Arabic before playing it for one minute each (better for learning to drum the rhythms than to dance to them).
Also, Roland (Leyla Jouvana's hubby) has one that covers all the rhythms and more, is dancable, and he lists the dums and teks of each track (28 tracks in all).

I like Uncle Mafufo's CD's for helping students learn to grasp what the rhythm sounds like because he speaks the rhythm using the words "doom" and "tek" before playing it, then starts out playing it slowly, then builds in speed and complexity.
I like Mary Ellen Donald's rhythm CD's for drilling my students in class because they maintain a rock-solid steady rhythm for 4 minutes at a time.
I like Jalilah's Raqs Sharqi for helping students learn how to recognize what the rhythm sounds like in the context of a song.

What are you planning to do with these? If you want to learn different rhythms then get rhythm cds designed for drummers.
The rhythm cds for dancers is only so that dancers can dance to the one rhythm, and normally one variation of that rhythm, for dance practice.

Solace has a CD called "rhythm of the dance" with just percussion, lots of different rhythms, the basics plus some rarer ones. It definitely has baladi, masmoudi, karsilama, ayoub, chifitelli...I forget what else. Sounds like just what your looking for. Great CD and very danceable.

I love Jalilah's for reference but as an in class teaching tool the duration of the sample rhythms aren't sufficient.

true that
You're right Nanda, definitely.
This is the rhythm CD I learned to in class - I felt like it was "real music" as opposed to just the rhythm over and over on a drum like some of the CDs I'd bought. I needed to hear the rhythm in situ as it were, at that particular point in my learning.

Here's a whole page of instructional materials:

I have "Rhythm Rides" though it's been a while since I pulled it out. I'll try to remember to check the cd tonight and list the rhythms included on it tomorrow.

Anne Harkin is an australian percussionist, her zaghareet tapes helped me alot when learning to identify rhythms.
