I like Nancy Ajram :-) She has great songs for bellydancing or Hadise . She did 2 years ago for the competition eurosong festival in 2009.

Tarkan has a new album out. "Op" is a terribly fun song to dance to

Re: New Turkish Pop music for bellydance?

Nancy Ajram has a presence in Turkey, and a Turkish fan club on Facebook. She's an international star, but she's not any more "Turkish pop music" than Enrique Iglesias, Ke$ha, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars, who are also quite popular in Istanbul now. (Billboard's Turkish site seems to be offline, but this site gives links to various other Turkish music charts, including some radio station playlists http://www.lanet.lv/misc/charts/.)

I'm not aware of a specific attempt Nancy's made to cultivate the Turkish market, like singing a duet with a popular Turkish singer, but I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere there are Turkish singers who've covered her songs, and a record like "Oul Tani Keda," which was a monster hit for her, was probably also a big seller in Turkey, even with its Arabic lyrics.

In general, there is some overlap in popular music between Turkey and the Arab World, because of geographic proximity and similarity of musical traditions. Offhand, some examples would be Tarkan's "Kimdi" (a cover of (Cheb) Khaled's "Didi"), Mustafa Sandal's "Demo" (Amro Mostafa's "El Kebir Kebir"), and Rida and Nina Boutros' "El Bawsi" (Tarkan's "Simarik"). Then there is this song by Huseyin Karadayi, which I came across today while skimming the radio charts for what is currently hot in Istanbul. Despite the club-heavy thumping, something about that melody sounds familiar...

    Yes indeed...

I´m not at all in touch with the current pop scene, but my lovely collegue made her last term beginners choreo to Bendeniz "Kirmizi Biber"
(I can surely get a translation,it was something about how he´s missing out now when she gives up on him-also involved smearing red pepper paste in his eyes) Maybe you like it?

By the way if you go to youtube and put in the search Turkish V arabic some lovely person has done a whole load of compilations (up tp 14) of Turkish and Arabic crossovers.. I found this soo useful.
Here is one of them but if you go onto youtube the info tells you exactly who everyone is-its a great resource.

Re: New Turkish Pop music for bellydance?

I sort of have the impression that these are commercial collections of cover songs, but I can't find the source. I did find this more extensive list http://www.dengedilemin.net/fantazi-...ull-indir.html that has some additional song exchanges.

[Now edited with links] I'm particularly puzzled by the idea that one song, Gökhan Özen's 2003 song "Civ Civ"

is listed twice in reference to two different Arabic songs. I haven't been able to locate a date or composer for Cheb Douzi's "Hobi Lik" (third one here http://www.al-fann.com/path/Morocco/Rai/Cheb%20Douzi/), but Mohammed Fouad's "Tayeb Tayeb" is credited to Egyptian composer Tamer Ashour in 2005.

These three songs are very, very similar, but they're not exactly the same, either. I tend to think of a song cover as being a more direct interpretation. If you don't go for a straight remake, maybe you change something about the arrangement, or translate the lyrics into another language. I want to say that "Hobi Lik" sounds like the common point between the other two, not "Civ Civ," but maybe they are coincidentally similar and not covers or plagiarisms. As far as I know, Khaled Agag's "Khabeito Aleik," Baha'a Sultan's "Al wad albu beyougaou," and Jewel's "Intuition" have never been linked to each other beyond people noticing that they sort of sound the same (i.e., nobody calls one a cover or rip-off of another). They're not strictly remakes, but there is clearly something common between them, too.

On a barely related note, if Egypt gets too rough for Amro Mostafa, he'd probably be welcomed to move to Turkey. I recognized ten of those song titles in xXDiamondsOnChainXx's playlists as being his songs, so he's apparently quite popular there.

Please, that list of links was unintelligible! Embed, or at least hotlink the links, just so we can see what's what!

Kirmizi Biber is on the Putamayo Turkish Grooves Cd. It's a good one for Turkish pop (it's been out a few years so not completely new.)

Do watch out for some of Murat Boz's lyrics. I was really digging one song and it turns out he was talking about being a bit of a manwhore

Okay, fixed upthread. If I could have just linked the first time, I would have, but I was trying to avoid blowing up the thread with a lot of Arabic videos. Apparently it's feast or famine in the new-Bhuz code. First it wouldn't automatically expand videos at all, and now I can't figure out how to keep it from not happening.

Though not the most recent but just a couple more (I really like Tarkan and Serdar Ortac ;)): Nez (a bit over the top but the beats are quite catchy ;), and Sertab Erener.
