Thread: "Ali" Shaabi song?

I'm looking for a shaabi song that I would think would be titled something Ali... Now I know it isn't very precise... but we started a choreo in class tonight and unfortunately my teacher didn't have the exact name or artist, so I can't buy it on Amazon or Itunes.

It keeps saying Ali quite a few times during the first minute (but the 20-30 first seconds are only music).

Ah well, maybe no one will know, but just thought I'd ask

Oooh, does it start out with more "reciting" than singing? If so I bet it's "Ya Ali". I have it on a Mona Said CD- I think Mona Said's Showpiece is what it's called.
The singer is reciting an old poem... something about the water coming down from up high. Arabs will sing along with this song- and it's a whole lot of fun.

Is it "Habibi Alli" by Miami?



Technically, this one is "alaikum" not "alli," but sometimes people mishear.



There's also an older song "Alli daq al-gar" by Hassan al-Asmar here حسن الأسمر الي داق الجار, but this one seems less likely. If the word might be "aala" instead of "alli," that opens up a larger range of possibilities. Both Saad al-Soghayer and Ameena have songs circulating in the dance community with "aala meen" in the titles.

Maeva, I know exactly what song you're talking about, but I don't know the name of it either! Mohamed El Hosseny taught a shaabi choreography to it this summer. If I remember correctly, he said it's from a film. That's all I know but hopefully this will help someone else chime in ...

ETA: Oh, and I believe it's Ali, the name -- in the beginning someone calls out several times, Ya Ali -- like they're addressing a character in the movie...

I'm not getting anything back when I search on the first part of this string (واحد عليك يا دنيا) except this post--which may just mean the lyrics aren't online. Sha'abi songs tend to be underrepresented at lyrics forums, as a general statement. The presumption seems to be if you're listening to this kind of music, you don't need a transcription/translation of the lyrics.

I also didn't find anything for the string يا علي فيلم except the Hindi movie "Gangster." I came across a bunch of other songs with "Ya Ali" as or part of the title, but everything was east of Egypt, and it wouldn't make sense to be teaching an Egyptian routine to a debke or a Khaleeji song.

If it's the same shaabi song from a film that he taught a choreography to in the workshop I took from him last spring then it's by Riko, but Mohamed El Hosseny said that he edited (or had edited) the song from the film himself, that it's not commercially available, and probably not illicitly available either. He had to edit bits of dialogue out, he said. So even somebody else's recording from the film (a Ramadan series iirc) might not work for performance.

I made the same assumption- but the beginning and the middle speaking parts are actually from an old poem by a very famous and well loved poet- if it's from this song:



It sounds like Ya Ali, as if speaking to some guy named Ali. I got a translation from a native (and had confirmation from others. lol).
I have notes on the lyrics somewhere...
And if this is the song you're looking for, it's on a Mona Said CD.

Ha, and this one's mine! Looks like Maeva and I weren't thinking of the same song after all, but I really did want more info on this song, so I guess this thread was productive for both of us! Which song again? The Emad Barour one? If it's on a movie soundtrack, it will probably be nearly impossible to locate legally (same goes for Riko--every time he comes up on Bhuz, nobody can find him). It does look like the Emad Barour song is on a couple of sha'abi collections, though. Maqam has him here Shaabiat 2010 - Vol. 2 and another site lists this one Shaaby Hits Vol.2 - Shaaby Hits - Discover more music & videos TopMix4, both Volume 2's, but apparently different records.

In my experience, your best strategy is to go to Cairo and find a street corner kiosk or a small alley shop selling cassettes and (hopefully) CDs. Hum and sing the kind of songs you like to the vendor, hang out and listen to a bunch of music, attract a bit of a crowd and get more music advice than you ever thought was possible. Then buy a bunch of cassettes and (hopefully) CDs, and pray you luck out and find the actual song you wanted to buy a copy of on there.

Not efficient, not cheap, but it occasionally works. Barring that or finding possibly sketchy illegal download sites, I am not sure. There is so much that is hard to get outside of Cairo!

The Rico one I posted is available on a Mona Said CD- easily available from Dahlal. It's called Ya Ali.

Hee hee, well, I am 99.9% sure that is exactly how I first heard Emad Borour, so I figured I would be honest. I hope you can try it in the future, too, it is a blast! :)

I know this conversation is old, but I just read it! if you want to find the video from the movie, it is on youtube. if you can find my "channel" or whatever on there, it should be under my "favorites" (name is phaedradarwish on youtube). if you need this on a cd, nourhan sharif has it for sale on one of her oriental dance cds she gets directly from Egypt. just email her and tell her you want to buy the CD of the shaabi tune she danced to at the Arab Dance Seminar this November. the cd is $25, i believe. the rest of the cd wasn't that great, but i just love this tune so much it was worth it!
