I'm looking for music in 5/8 and 7/8. For now I'm not limiting myself to any particular genre. I've got several laz bars (in 7/8) but 5/8 is much harder to come across. Fusion stuff is also welcome. Thank you in advance oh mighty bhuz :))))

Re: Help! Loking for songs or parts of songs in 5/8 and 7/8
I am not too familiar with 5s, but there is always Dave Brubeck's Take 5. Berberian has a 5 (Sevan) on Ode to an Oud.
Gokte Yildiz Ay Musun on Bergama Gaydasi by Laco Tayfa is a super fun 7, I performed to it two weeks ago. You already know Hijaz Mandira, I assume? :-) I am also partial to Gurzu Kizi on Bende Can by Yordan Tokcal.

Steffib--how do you dance to a "7"? i have done a sorta folky laz dance to the Laz song on Dalia Carela's CD. I'm curious how you perform yours.

Re: Help! Loking for songs or parts of songs in 5/8 and 7/8
Hm, that's a good question :-) I have had about 10 minutes instruction on dancing to 7s (by Aszmara from New York, who is amazing with 7s). Mostly, I either do things on 135 followed by a shorter pause, or on 1 and 5. To me, shoulder accents (135) seem like the perfect match, hops, hip twists, lots of steppy/weight change things. Not sure that's terribly useful, I am afraid. I have video of last week,if i t is not too terrible, I will post a link.

This is a piece I wrote based on a Turkish 7/8, it's called Rania's 7 and is on iTunes and CDBaby as a download:

Totally not Middle Eastern, but Gravity by A Perfect Circle alternates between 7 count and 5 count rhythms.
