I'm looking for some modern current khaleeji music. Also any song suggestions for classic khalleeji songs? I remember we used to dance to Leila, Leila Leila, and something like Wa Wa adouni.
I'm not to familiar with this genre so I need help from bhuzzers.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
I love the dance but I'm not an expert on the music. I'm still learning.
I have an album called "The Best Khaleeji Album in the World . . Ever 2003" whose text is written in English and Arabic. It's got some pretty good, upbeat, modern tunes. It sounds like its from a series so there should be more.
Nancy Ajram's "La Teloum" is a modern Khaleegy tune (watch our troupe: ).
Amera has a modern tune on her album Asal but you might not like it because the percussion is the only real instrument part. This really bugs me about the whole album. She picked great tunes and a gorgeous title/concept so why not invest in producing it properly?
I will watch this thread with interest to see what others offer.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
There are some great songs out there - here are few I like
Yasser Habeeb - Marmarisah
Ali Bin Mohammed - Al Kadilak (quite fun & a little silly)
Rashed Al Majed - Al Oyoun & Mushkilny
Hussein Al Bagali - Sabouha
Fat I Mah - Zamani
Asala Nasri - Meta Shoofak
REG project has a fun version of Leila leila
I could go on but this is a good start

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
I have a request in the khaleegi department. Can anyone help me locate where to buy CDs by Abdel Rub Adris. I worked with him in London in the early 1980s and he sang one song that has stuck in my head to this day ... Youm al-Ahad fi Tariqi. Can anyone help me locate a copy of this song?
I remember dancing to nothing but Leila Leila and 2 other songs that I loved just as much - but I never learned their names ... big help, I know. I will try to upload 30 sec clips.
I LOVE khaleegi music. ... It's good for hair tossing.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
Hi Norma - I would download what you like - more economical
Hi Yasmin - I really like Rashed Al Majed & he has several CD's
Al Hadaya, Mashkalni, Al Hal Al Sab, Shertan Al Zahab - there may be more but this is what I know of
I did a quick search on Maqam for Khaleeji & several compilations came up -

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
I don't have a recommendation for a specific song/album but here's Maqam's pop Khaleeji section for buying CDs for Yasmin, with 76 albums:
Khaleeji
And Maqam's mp3 section for Khaleeji, featuring 12 artists, for Norma:
http://www.maqammp3.com/Khaleeji-C176.html
Of course, just cuz they're in this section doesn't mean they're suitable for performance. But I thought it might be a good place to browse & discover new artists.Last edited by Lauren_; 04-29-2012 at 10:20 AM.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
This is Hussein al-Jasmi's latest single, "al-Mseera al-wardeyya," but it probably won't be easy to find as a legal download, since it's both really current and not on an album (yet?).
The problem with a lot of Gulf music is that it either comes out on Rotana, a label that has not been quick to embrace download technology, or it comes out on labels that aren't always easily found in the West. Nabil Shuail, Mansour Zayed, Fahad al-Kubaisi, Abadi al-Johr, Ali Abdullah, Nawaf al-Jumaan, Khalid Abdel Rahman, Miami, and others all have fairly current records out. The trick, as always, is finding them legally. Most vendors will stock Nabil's latest, but the other artists will probably be harder to track down. Rotana does periodically put out compilations of their hits, and sometimes just Khaleeji hits, but how easy they are to buy is another matter.
I don't know who'd sell it legally, but a search in Arabic shows a handful of sites for downloading it as a bootleg MP3. I'm guessing if it's out there legally in the US, it's on a vintage cassette that's been sitting around in somebody's store since back in the day. I can get you the names of a couple of vendors in Dearborn who aren't online, but I can't guarantee they'd have it or that they wouldn't be selling you something they pulled off the Internet themselves...
It looks like Amazon fronts the "Khaleeji Mix" compilation for BuyArabic. Full albums by Rashed al-Majed and Asala are at Maqam, Rashid, and BuyArabic (look for "Best of"/"al-Hadaya"+"Mashkalny" by Rashed and "Akwaat" by Asala). Finding the albums for the other titles will be hit or miss.
Is it the same "La teloum" that's on "Ah wa noss?"
If anyone's considering this one, at least don't wear a traditional thobe. Natives think you're out of touch when you wear a thobe to dance to contemporary Khaleeji pop as it is. Wearing a thobe for the REG Project would be like dressing up as Dolley Madison to dance to Walter Murphy's disco song "A Fifth of Beethoven." Unless you're aiming for anachronistic farce or some high, artsy statement, please don't.

Don't hesitate to buy Rashed's "Mashkalny" album. It was an enormous hit when it was released, and it's an essential addition to any Khaleeji pop fan's collection.

The REG Project version of Lela Lela is a nice modern remake of a traditional song - I'm just saying...

I'm currently working with "Naweelak" from Outi's Helm el Raqs CD. Very nice song that I can't get out of my head! You can find it at Buy Indie Music | Music Download Store | CDs and MP3s | CD Baby.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
Hah! Found this, thanks to Torbeau!
Amazon.com: Idol Husain Al Jasmi: Husain Al Jasmi: MP3 Downloads
There is a track on the Husain Al Jasmi CD called Khaleji and features Rashed AL Majed and Abdul Majeed Abdullah. So with these 3 artists it looks like I'm on the right track at least.
Music is more mellow than I expected.Last edited by norma; 05-05-2012 at 09:09 AM.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
I'm not having much luck finding an album by Hussein al-Jasmi to tie it to. I can find streaming sites with copies of it, but no official release. Mohammed Abdo is listed as the composer in the description here, so I'm guessing it's originally Abdo's song and Hussein is just covering in concert.
There's a live version on Abdo's "Bint el nour" album at Maqam, FWIW.

Re: Looking for khaleeji/khaleegi
I don't think it is the same song as the Mohammed Abdo/Hussein al-Jasmi one. The lyrics don't appear to match. Between my weak Arabic and the audio quality, I can't pull out enough words to ID it, though. Whatever it is, she uses it in both of the Nile Group clips you found.
That was different alright, sort of a fusion of Qawliya and ma'alaya. I can't imagine the clip with the guys wouldn't look scandalous to a lot of Gulf natives.
