posting a photo IN a thread

Question: how do some people actually get a photo to show up in a thread? I use the "insert image" function and it asks for a web address. I give the web address and it inserts as a little box with an X. Or, I can insert a link. But I can't get a photo to post within a thread. Help?

I upload the photo to my website, then paste the URL into the dialogue box that comes up when you click on the image icon. You have to makes sure you get the URL exactly right. I think the little box with an x means "broken link."
