    Extracting section from dvd

I have poured over the topics here and have not found anything that quite fits my query. I have several dvds that my gal pal made and I want to extract my performance from the dvd and onto a Mac OSX and then to youtube. I realize once I extract the section, all I need to do is convert it from a vob to an mpg4 but I can't get the section I want. I don't have final cut. Would that help? I am soooooooo frustrated ..c::

I'm on a PC, and I was able to download some shareware and trialware programs for editing video and converting various video formats. Did you look at Free Mac Software Downloads - Download.com for DVD editing software?

I have used dvd ripper for that. I think if you don't buy it, you are restricted in some way -- maybe to 5 min cuts.

You will want to experiment with the output format. There are a gajillion different mpeg4 format variations. Since I'm not familiar with video technology, I have mostly used trial and error. Rip a 30 second section and then see if it plays okay.

The main problem I have had is the audio and video getting out of synch. Using .avi files, which are huge, seem to solve the problem.

If you want to produce a "best of me" dvd, you should save the ripped sections in some format that can be opened in iMovie, then you can convert everything to a dvd in iDVD.

You need to convert the .vob file that your performance is on to .avi, then you can split the avi file and get your performance separated.
Then if you need to, you can convert the split file to mpeg.

There are free programs on the internet.... avi splitter is one of them (that will let you split the avi file)

    google
    "free vob to avi"
    "free avi splitter"
    "free vob to avi mpeg"
    and you'll find them. :)
