    Freeware video editor?

So Windows Movie Maker can go suck a big fat mizmar as far as I care - it keeps randomly shutting down on me and losing my projects.

I have some videos in .avi format that I would like to post to youtube - I just need to do some basic editing (adding a title, cutting off a few seconds at the end). Can anyone recommend a free avi video editor that is user friendly?

"Free" "video editor" and "user friendly" are not all going to apply to the same product. There are several low-end editors available, and having played with more than a few editors, you get what you pay for with them. Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Ulead VideoStudio all have low-end versions that should be good for you, and I think they have free trial versions you can try out.

Just a question: are you running vista? I had to download the latest version MovieMaker 2.6 because of this same issue. Check your version and go to Microsoft.com to d/l the latest if you don't have it.

After installing version 2.6 and disabling the Xvid codec, I was able to edit rip two performances from DVDs, edit and upload to youtube today! If you're just uploading from a video camera you may not have the Xvid issue, but I did. You'll know because you'll get a big green bar through the middle of your movies after you've saved them. Let me know if you have this issue and I'll walk you through how I fixed it.

I am running vista - I'll download MM2.6 and see if that helps. I had read about disabling the xvid codec but can't find it on my machine.

I'll look into the alternatives you mention JGilchrist and thanks for the info, THTX!
