Music editing software

I need affordable, easy to use music editing software that works with both wav and mp3 files. Any recommendations?

I use it mainly to fade music in or out and to cut sections out to shorten songs. After editing I ultimately open it up in iTunes to burn CDs.

I use Screenblast Sound Forge, which I think costs about $70-$80. (As opposed to the professional edition of Sound Forge, which costs about three times as much.) It's sold by Sony. Anyway, I've successfully used it with both MP3's and WAV files, and I find it easy to use.

I've also tried Adobe Audible, and found it confusing. (It used to be called CoolEdit, before Adobe bought the company and renamed the product.) I'll still use it if I want to edit the sound portion of a video clip, but I don't like it for WAV and MP3 files.

I use Amadeus, $40 for the basic version, a bit more for more options. The basic version can do fadeouts, clipping, speed slow-downs and speed-ups without changing the pitch of the sound. It probably does more, but that's what I've done so far with it. Then I included results into iTunes to burn CDs.

I've used Goldwave for over 10 years and it's great! The newest version has much better bells and whistles than the previous. For me, the learning curve was steep and I was just beginning to get the hang of it as my shareware term came to the stage where I got ads every few minutes. I was happy to buy it by then - love it! (and I'm a total-techno-klutz !)
