Your iPod boom box recommendations?
For years I've loved my Altec iM7 iPod speakers.
([ame=http://www.amazon.com/Altec-Lansing-inMotion-iM7-Portable/dp/B0009VKJH4]Amazon.com: Altec Lansing inMotion iM7 Portable Audio System for iPod (White): Electronics[/ame])
It can get really LOUD without distorting the music too much. I even used it for the Zombie Thriller dance last Halloween.
But now I am sad. My iPod touch does not work with it. ..cr.:
If you have speakers that work with the touch or the iPhone, please post here... I need recommendations! Thanks.

Re: Your iPod boom box recommendations?
Not the cheapest option, but we have the Bose Portable Sound Dock, and it sounds lovely. If you keep your eyes open, there are deals to be had sometimes, though. I happened to get a Christmas deal when I bought this for my DH, getting the Sound Dock, a spare battery, and a carrying case for less than the usual cost of the Sound Dock alone.
I like that it uses a rechargeable battery, and the sound is very good with little distortion at higher volumes. It also comes with a remote. The downside is there is no radio.

I have the Bose, too. Fabulous sound. I don't know whether it docks a Touch, though, unless it is through the earphones plug.

I have a Soundmatters Main Stage system. It's sort of a Bose knock-off:
soundmatters | MAINstageHD hifi theater console a revolutionary multi-speaker console with built-in amplifiers and digital processing - projects high-definition sound that fills almost any room
I get great sound from my iPod Nano hooked up with the mini-plug. It also has RCA inputs.
There's are a couple on ebay:
SoundMatters "Mainstage", quality sound add-on to TV - eBay (item 110499909982 end time Mar-02-10 19:40:21 PST)

If you find a system (or have one already) that only has the RCA inputs, you can get an RCA to mini-plug adapter. You could try that with your Bose systems.

I really like my Harman Kardon portable player. The new version is supposed to be unofficially compatible with iPhone and iTouch (read the reviews on Amazon). The older version can play them, but won't charge them in the process.

In my (admittedly very limited) experience I've noticed that hooking up an iPod thru the earphone jack gives less impressive sound than going through the Apple interface. Also, the Altec also charged the iPod for you, which was mighty handy. But I will take your suggestion and use it as a stopgap measure!

It will work. Admittedly, it won't charge. I'm not sure if they have any iPod adapter to adapter cables that will allow you to use an iPod dock with an iPod that doesn't exactly fit it.
I have one of the auxillary inputs for my car stereo. I use a separate car charger in the main iPod port and the mini-plug for the headphone to stereo input. You could do this with a USB wall charger if you fear your iPod battery will die. I got a nice little set by DLO from Best Buy that included a car lighter charger with USB plug and a wall outlet with a USB plug. This will just require you hogging two outlets.
I would highly suggest the mini-plug to RCA (red and white) adapter, though, just to have on hand. It comes in handy if you want to plug your iPod straight into any stereo system.

Re: Your iPod boom box recommendations?
Mine must be a different version. It has a dock that fits the Touch, although it's recommended to replace the little docking plate with one made specifically for the Touch. (We had one that came with the Touch, so we used that.) The cool little circular dock thingy turns out and can be pushed back in for transport. It charges the iPod. There is also an auxiliary jack, so other types of MP3 players can hook into it.

Bose Sound dock all the way! It's so portable and small but really fills a huge room with gorgeous rich sound. I love mine that I bought 2 years ago for about $400. Here's a link to their site: SoundDock Digital Music Systems - Bose iPod Speakers and iPod Docking Stations
