need help uploading video to imovie or idvd

I have some dvd footage of me and can't figure out how to upload it onto imovie or idvd so that I can edit the footage (there is a minute and a half at the beginning of the video before I start dancing) and add titles. I also don't really know the difference between idvd and imovie. Any and all help is apreciated! Or if you could point me to a tutorial...

I never did any of that myself, but I believe you need an intermediary program to rip the DVD into a file first. Hand Brake is an app that works well for me.

    the basics:
rip files from dvd with handbrake
    convert file format with ffmpegx
    import to imovie
    edit
export as m4v or quicktime file
    upload online

*this is of course only for footage you own and have the right to distribute
    good luck!

I use both, imovie is to make your movies, idvd is to make you dvds -
imovie is where you start by importing footage, it goes to an "event" then you use your "events" to make a "project" that you output as a movie which you can then use in idvd. is that any help?
where is your footage right now? I'm not sure why you can't import it? is it on dvd? if so I use Handbrake, a free download, that gets your dvd footage onto your computer so you can edit it. write me if you want, I'm on here sporadically so may miss it if you reply here -

Re: need help uploading video to imovie or idvd

I recently found another free program that rips dvds and converts all in one easy drag and drop process. It's called evom.

    Evom (Mac) - Download

For making a movie to post online or put on my ipod I just go into imovie, select "import movies" and navigate to where evom put my file or I can use the media browser to get the movie if it is in itunes or iphoto.

Once in there it's really easy to cut, copy, paste, crop, add sound effects, music etc. And then you can "share" to any device you want.

To burn a dvd you will have to import the movie to idvd. I'm not great at using idvd so I will let someone else explain that bit :-)

Re: need help uploading video to imovie or idvd

My footage is from my flipcam so it is in my iphoto or I drop it onto my desktop. I was using handbrake but all of a sudden, it won't work ;( it says it converts it but then I can't find it anywhere! It was just go to my desktop and now, nothing. I will try this Evom program. I've been trying to just drag the footage into imovie, I will use the import key instead. I am just really computer dumb although I have been able to upload to youtube but just don't know how to add titles and such

    Thanks everyone!

for your dvd, use mac the ripper and select extract main titles
then use ffmpegx to convert the .vob files to .m4v or quicktime format
then import the .m4v or quicktime into imovie
edit out the stuff you don't want
    convert to dvd with idvd
or use the imovie export function to create an m4v or quicktime file that is uploadable for youtube etc

    for your flipcam:
when you plug it into your computer, and go to imovie and select import, does imovie see your camera?
if not, you may need software from the camera manufacturer so the computer can talk to the camera
