Is there 1 software for both music and video editing?

Hi ladies, so I see various threads about software that is good for video editing and various threads for music editing.

Is there 1 that edits both? If yes, what is it? How do you rate it?

and is there 1 that would allow burning from CD and then edit.

Depends what you want to do. You can do very simple audio editing in video packages like trims and fades. Anything beefier than you are better off download audacity which is free.

hi saNoorah, why do you want to use one software package? If the reason is that you have limited time and want to keep things simple, it would be better to learn and use one of the two software packages really well, and ask someone else to edit the other type of media for you.

In my experience when someone produces one item for several tasks (take my printer/scanner for example) it will be average in both jobs. That's why you need separate software for video and audio editing.

You can edit audio in Adobe Premiere (video editing software), I have for years.
Final Cut Pro can do simple audio edits, but it also comes packaged with Soundtrack Pro for more powerful audio editing which is what I currently use. Of course you'll be paying the price for pro software, but the answer is yes there is software out there that you can use to do both.

Final Cut and Premiere are both excellent software with lots of tools.

As far as ripping music from a CD, you will have to use another software like itunes, realplayer windows media player or another media ripping software.

I use Audacity a lot for music editing, but I didn't know it would do video as well. Is that so or have I misread your post?

Yes, Audacity is for music - it's free and very easy and intuitive to use (it has a few little quirks).

Simple is a good idea - the best software is easy to use. In general, though, if you have two very different tasks, it is often simpler two have two different tools that are made specifically for the task, instead of one that has to make compromises to fit it all into one box. And, even if you find one program that does both, you will have to learn different parts of that program anyways.

    true. yes 2 different tasks.

I know there are many threads asking which is the better software for editing DVD/performances. But sometimes the threads (for my understanding) go into too much. Is there something like Audacity, that's simple, easy to use, free is always good LOL and works well with a pc?

Yes, I thought so, I must have misunderstood the post by HubicRuzz. I find Audacity excellent for music and was hoping it covered video as well when I saw that.

No Audacity is for audio only.

I think you might possibly use the free Windows Movie Maker to do trims on audio. Not sure about fades.

In Itunes apparently you can edit simple edits as well but not used it personally.

I second Windows Movie Maker. It's free with Windows XP and I use it for basic editing of clips so I can put them on youtube. Very easy to use, intuitive program.

Re: Is there 1 software for both music and video editing?

Oh good, instead of starting a new thread as I was about to I'll just ask here-- I had Realplayer for years, and upgraded to Plus (first RP 10, then 11) for the main reason you could burn CD's with the songs crossfaded into each other by a few seconds. But the last time I downloaded it- about 3 years ago, I had a lot of issues with my computer as well as the program. Although I will say the tech support spent a lot of time with me on the phone we could not figure out why the program was being hinky, and of course nobody would believe it was causing other issues with the computer. Now granted the computer was a POS but so was the one I had before it which had run RP without trouble for the most part.

Anyway, I have not bothered to download it onto my last couple of junky computers so just lived without the crossfade burning ability for the past three years since I have yet to find another program that did it. Now I see that CNet gave the newest Realplayer SP version a really good rating so was going to try it on my new, finally decent (I hope!) computer. But having called ahead to check, I find that they want to charge me full price for the Pro version as it is an "all new platform" (although said I could speak to management about a discount) but was assured that the free version now includes the crossfading? Anyone know if this is true? My other option would be to download the old Realplayer 11 and activate my pro status but not sure I want to chance that. I was willing to try the newest one with trepidation just because of CNet's review.

Any advice, suggestions or tales of your experience would be appreciated.

Oh, and on topic- apparently the Pro version of the newest RP software does do HD video editing...you could also maybe try Imtoo although it wasn't acting quite right the other day, can't think of any others off the top of my head not already mentioned in this thread...oh wait, Imtoo is a converter, not sure if it also edits...

And just to mention, I have Winamp Pro, JetAudio, iTunes and WMP-

Re: Is there 1 software for both music and video editing?

I use Sony Vegas for both audio and video. I love it because I can layer the tracks (similar to using layers in Photoshop) which is fantastic for cutting and splicing audio, as well as mixing video clips. I've also used Adobe Premiere and Windows Movie Maker but much prefer Sony Vegas.

As far as ripping audio from CDs goes try Windows Media Player and if that doesn't work (CD is protected) try Audiograbber (it's free).
