It's my understanding that there really isn't a simple way for a not-very-computer-literate person to get footage from a DVD onto youtube. At least without spending money on software.
It's fairly easy to get footage from a video camera onto youtube, but not a DVD (because it's already been saved in a special format that makes it difficult to extract only the part you want). You have to use a couple of different not-very-user-friendly free programs to get the job done.
I hope someone can prove me wrong here.
A local videographer can probably do it for you for a really reasonable price.

My hubby converts video footage (from a variety of formats) to .WMV files and uploads it to youtube for me. Thank goodness for his tech support!!

my (new-ish) computer came with free video making software. i just pop the DVD in, open in Nero SmartStart (teehee) and edit with their fun and kooky tools. I've been saving the files as .mpgs and they upload nicely on YouTube.
So, you need to get video editing software (or find out if you have it already) sso you can save the videos locally to your computer and shrink it down to YouTube's parameters and then upload it to YouTube - they have instructions.

You can do it for free, but like Lauren alluded to, free software is not necessarily for the faint of heart. I use DVD Shrink to extract the footage from the DVD into a VOB file, then use AutoGK to turn the VOB into an AVI. Finally, I edit and add titles with Windows Movie Maker (comes standard on most Windows machines) and turn it into a WMV to compress the file size down managably, and that's what I upload to YouTube.
I have done this for other dancers before at a fairly minimal cost, and threads like these make me wonder if I should more widely offer it up as a service. Anyone interested can certainly PM me - but of course, you'd have to be willing to snail mail me your DVD, then wait to get it back.

Interesting -- roughly how much would such a thing cost, Galatea?

It depends on how many clips, how many DVDs are involved and how much editing you need done (i.e., dump an entire performance versus making a montage of several clips), if you do the YouTube uploading yourself or want me to do it, etc. Basically, it depends on how much time would be involved. PM me and we can talk turkey. ..g.:

yes of course Nero...
I unfortunately have Roxio "easy" media creator but not easy enough for me unless i am just copying the dvd.
I have window media center and movie maker but they dont seem to do the 4 other things Laura 2 tells me to do..cr.:
I will go find Nero Smart start at the store tomorrow i guess it will be faster than finding myself a husband like Bintebeled's.

[quote=palmier;80180] ..l;, There was a lot of trial and error
figuring all that out, but now I have it down to a science. If you have the funds, it sounds like the NeroSmart software (or a similar product) is the way to go - everything all in one and user friendly to boot.

Palmier, your opening comment was, "I am not the best when it comes to computers."
Given this statement, my suggestion on how to move a clip from DVD to youtube is this: find a student to barter with for classes, or a tech-savvy friend, and get that person to do it for you! Video editing technology is NOT user-friendly, and not for the faint of heart! It's been getting better over time, but it involves a lot of pain and suffering - there's a HUGE learning curve.
Those brave souls who venture into the world of video editing will find that the path is full of snares and pits. For example, video editing takes enormous amounts of hard disk space, can take forever to do on an older computer, etc. Even people who are really tech-savvy find themselves wanting to run screaming into the night when first learning to do this stuff. It's ugly.
Video editing is fine for people who don't mind being patient with learning lots of techy detail, buying additional hard disks, and hitting lots of roadblocks. But for people who consider themselves to be "not the best when it comes to computers" I would advise making friends with a techy who is willing to help you.

note to myself :
-either quickly find a husband like Bintbeled's
or
-quickly find students and or friends who work in video editing
Shira i bet it is that Nemo comment that got you worried :Alol:
I am improving, a couple of years ago i could just cut a song at the begging or at the end , now i sometimes cut a song in the middle
I am not going to edit videos yet , for that i am willing to pay someone.
actually what i did is gave 3 bd dvds to a collegue , she filmed my show and she then divided the in chapters for each numbers and sent me the dvd.
maybe i can bribe her with another dvd so she puts what i need on youtube, but eventually i have to learn, i want to have some video to put on my web site ( that i will pay someone to do in 2008 hopefully).
still have to tranfer my videos onto dvds , that is why i bought Roxio in the first place..w.:

There is at least one version of VirtualDub that will open files from a DVD to allow you to edit them. The catch is you then need to use VirtualDub to compress the file, but I believe there are tutorials that tell you how to do this. Me, I'm a trial and error learner, but I manage.
